I will be used for game and the internet mostly. These prices are all from newegg just to get an idea of cost. What do you think?

Athlon XP 1900+ (1.6GHz) CPU $255 or a 1.47GHz for $150
Geforce3 Ti200 Video card 180
Plextor 16x10x40 CDRW 125
EPOX EP-8KHA+ Motherboard 105
IBM 60GXP 40Gig hard drive 96
SB Audigy Xgamer soundcard 84
Enlight Case w/ 340w power supply 60
Crucial 256M DDR Ram 55
Teac floppy drive 9

Total of ~$969.

worst. idea. evar!

anyways, id go for the 1700, the 1900 isnt worth the price premium.
the plextor kicks ass, but if it were me, id get the 24x lite-on for 80$
and id get another 256 megs of ram for a total of 512, just for the hell of it.
and maybe go for a 60gig 7200rpm instead of the 40gb, only 20$ more.

looks slick any way you decide. but definately would get the 1700 (1.47) and not the xp1900, if you are getting it you might as well get the ti500 vid card.

Good piont on the 1700 (1.47) it's only $150. Is the Lite-on decent? Should I go with the IBM or Maxtor HD? Thanks

THe lite on is a much cheaper brand than plextor, and the plextor only slightly outperforms it. lite on is the best bang for your buck, but the plextor is the best, period.

Haha, I've never built a computer for anybody else, but somehow I always end up being tech support for other less computer-literate people. Anyway, it isn't that bad, since the guy who calls me most about this stuff also will occasionally get me used computer parts off ubid as payment. :)

Anyway, to make this post worthwhile, I would second the motion that you get an additional 256mb of ram. Especially if he'll be running windows XP, he'll need it.

what zug said, it's a good burner, but not the quality of the plextor. but a 24x for the price, it's the best bang for the buck (same for the xp1700). i personally prefer maxtor hd's. the IBM's may be faster, but you could probably never tell it, but maxtor has advanced replacements and afaik, ibm does not. i always get my maxtor drives the day after i ask for an RMA (they are about 2 horus from here :))
