Ok..another 6800 upgrade question

If I take the plunge..do you think ATI will own the 6800's in a couple of months as history has shown in the past couple of years?

The thing is by looking at the benchmarks at tom's the 6800 spanks the crap out of my 9700 pro for only about $100 more than my card. I love ATI and i've been a loyal buyer of theirs for quite a while now but I want the best bang for my buck. ATI is charging way too much for their cards as of late.

Anyone agree with me?

Ok..so do I take the plunge?

Current owners of this card...are the fans on these loud?

Yup I do agree wtih you 100%. But you day pay more for better quality. I say if you want to test out a 6800, go with the 6800 GT 256mb. Don't go with a 128mb version.

I think the X800pro should cost little more than the 6800, and way less than the GT. I think the 6800 would be a good move from where you are at now. Myself, I don't up-grade till my favorite games start to struggle with the hardware I have.

My 9500>9700pro is going to last one more round as far as my needs are concerned, but I too have looked closely at the 6800 as an upgrade.

I don't think you should do it. A 6800NU is by no means twice as fast as a 9700PRO, and in many cases is a very incremental upgrade. I would hold out a little longer until something like the X800XT or 6800GT is within your budget.

And it's "more than $100" more than the OP's 9700p . . . . if you sell your 9700p for $110, you're still gonna pay over $170 more for the "upgrade". 😉

A 6800Gt would be a more noticeable and worthwhile upgrade (for still more $$).

I tell you what. My 9800 Pro was having problems with my new DFI LanpartyUT 250GB motherboard, so on a whim I decided to buy a new Chaintech AA6800 (6800nu) for $265. Did not correct issues with DFI motherboard by the way, which is being sent back to NewEgg. My 9800 Pro 128MB flashed to an XT ran 450/370 on a daily basis so it is a good, fast example. The New chaintech AA6800 I got is a good one as well that enables the full 16 pipes and 6vp's and overclocks very well to 435/910 so far. So, some games like Doom3 run much faster with the 6800nu (as expected) and others like FarCry are only slightly faster (maybe 20% faster) on it. So in my case, I am selling my 9800 Pro for $170 so it was a $95 upgrade to the 6800nu. Is it worth it? I think so, but your 9700 Pro is still a pretty good card and should be fine for a while longer still if you can hold out.

they already spank nvidia 😉

i don't however see any "hi end" releases in the immediate future... perhaps by spring.

but a few things aside (*cough* video processing *cough*), i still like my 6800gt. either one you get, despite their respective strenghts/weaknesses will be a very nice improvement over your 9700p. whethr those improvements are worth $100 (or more) can only be decided by you, and as someone stated earlier the specs for the rest of your pc should be considered as well.

btw, the 9700p isn't ready for retirement just yet; i'm still running one, as well as a 9800p, in other rigs 🙂

I got rid of my 9700pro for a Gainward 6800 GT GS

mostly due to a two-year video card cycle that i have been following since i got my Maxtor Mystique

If you get the best now you will have a good card for at least the next two years.

Well here's my current computer specs..soon to change.

Barton 2500 @ 3200
OCZ 1gig 512x2 PC3200 Value series 🙁 (Soon to change to Corsair xms or similar)
Abit NF7-S v2.0
9700 Pro (Silencer rev 2 or 3 )
Soundstorm
Seagate 200gig IDE
Thermalright slk900u
All this is soon to be watercooled
And assorted periphials

One thing that made me really want to upgrade my vid card was cs : source. I get some lag with my settings up (Lag sucks). I've been really fond of ATI but not fond of their prices especially when a 6800nu can be had for a little over $200 or so which would stomp my card in the ground.

Decisions decisions.

If an x800 pro was cheaper I would be all over it..

I personally would go with an nvidia card, however I am somewhat partial. I have owned 1 ATI card which was a 9800XT and had loads of trouble with the ATI drivers, but none with the Omega Drivers.

I feel that I shouldnt have to use user created drivers because ATI themselves cant get them working properly.

Also, for Doom3 based games, the GeForce 6 series owns ATI

Weird.

I know back in the days before ATI was good, their drivers were horrid. I soon went out and bought a Geforce 2 ti which was great and so was the Geforce 3 I bought after that. But after I found out that ATI had gotten their act together I soon bought an ATI card (9500np). I was stunned. The card was great all around.

I've never had any problems with ATI drivers since.

Just a head's up . . ..

since you are asking about new releases. 😉

R480/nv48 is due (paperlaunch?) at the end of this year or the beginning of next . . . . just a bump-up in speeds but should make for more availability of current high-end cards and price stability.

R520/nV50 are due by middle of next year and should be significantly faster than today's top cards.

The move to a 6800Standard from a 9700p will be substantial but not mind-blowing. IF you can wait, it is a good plan. If you can get a 6800 for "cheap" AND a good price for your 9700p it might be a good idea.

However, about the time you NEED to upgrade from a 9700p - when new games demand it - the 6800 owners will also start to get dissatisfied with their card's peformance. . . . . a 6800-GT would have a longer useful gaming-life. 😉

None of you are mentioning the 50%+ chance he has to add 10-15% performance to a 6800NU by softmodding?

I would think a softmodded NU would be a big upgrade over a 9700P, and even a normal one would be a big upgrade at newer games.
