Ok, all of the IBM Death Star hard drives I used are dead.

I built 4 computers for people using IBM 60 gxp desk star hard drives. Within the last year, all of them were dead and today, the 4th one just died. It was making the rattle of death.

That sounds like something to celebrate. Better to kill them off quickly, then to live in constant fear of thier demise.

Can someone describe the click of death? I always wonder if I hear it right.... Or someone record it?? I'm not sure if what I hear is the click of death with my 75GXPs.

What are these, 4-5 years old now? By that point a high percentage of drives will fail if used steadily, regardless of brand.

I remember there was a series of Fujitsu drives that was hitting 100% failure rate. We had one of those drives.....

I know you can't expect IBM Deskstars to last long. I hear they've improved in that aspect since Hitachi took over the Deskstar line.

Yep and I believe they were glass tempered heads...They also brought new speeds to the table.

One of these, I don't remember which one it is. I think it's the Hitachi link:

IBM hard drive

Hitachi Drive

eh...I have drives that are WAY older then 4-5 years. In fact, we just got rid of 200 PC's that had 6 year old Seagates in them. of the 400 (original, they have trickled away over time) we had maybe 20 drive failures over the 6 years.
