well then don't reformat. It might work. But some people like doing things the right way. Do whatever you want. Another worthless post.
It might work? So upgrading your processor and only having "might work" results is not an indicator of stability? I'm just trying to help the OP, you on the otherhand seem to want to attack me for no reason:

Switching motherboards and having windows stable has nothing to do with the CPU, it's the fact that different motherboards, will have differant hardware, and differant drivers, so swapping out a motherboard and expecting windows to be 100% stable is just stupid..and the Pentium-D has the same symptoms as the X2, it's windows not properly handling the dual core thats the problem, not because it's Amd or Intel..as you can see I as well have both an X2, and a pentium-D as well as a pentium-m, and couple single core Pentium-4's. And I recomend the X2, it's cooler, it's more efficiant, and it's just plain simple the better CPU at this time.

Damn I am sick of anandtechrocks saying there are all these "problems" I hear you say it 10 times more than all people put together say they actually have a problem with it.
IF YOU DO A CORRECT INSTALL WITH THE DRIVERS, THERE ARE NO PROBLEMS !!!!
Get the 3800 X2
Mark, seriously settle down it's a f*cking computer processor.
You're such a joke, he mentioned stability being a major factor and this is the FIRST TIME I've mentioned such "problems."
And don't pertend like there are not a lot of threads mentioning X2 problems with games and such.

X2's are socket 939 just like most A64s. Yes the OP will start with a fresh version of XP because his computer is brand new. But if I were to upgrade my San Diego, I don't think I should have to reformat my PC.

X2 3800+, stability is fine if you select the best motherboard. ASUS/DFi
Interesting you say that since there are countless threads about driver/ compatibility problems with X2s.
Regardless, I think the dominance in performance as well as the better heat management of the X2 3800+ over the PD 830 out weighs the software issues associated with it.
I must say in all fairness to AMD that the board they sent to us as their platform representative was much more user friendly than Intel's 955 board that gave us nothing but a hard time right out of the gate. We spent a week of our time just getting the board to even recognize their own damn CPU, which was more than a mere headache as it sent us back on our schedule by days and wasted many precious man hours just fiddling with the board.
