oink.cd shut down

first time in like 10 years that i have shed a tear

🙁

o well i guess ill just fire up the ole news reader

Things have really changed around here. Used to be the merest mention of illegal download of music brought a fire storm of outcry. Bans used to be issued too.

I buy cds and records every week, but that was simply because I could find review sites that I generally liked and then could go download the album on oink and decide if it was actually worth the money.

My purchasing of older music will go way way down and unless artists stream their cds from their website...I won't be buying much new music either.

There also goes all the rare stuff that's impossible to find unless you have several hundred dollars to drop on a vinyl that was released x yrs ago.

testicles.

I know...I figured since there are actually long-lived threads asking for demonoid, etc invites this news link was safe enough.

They should have just done away with major labels, most users there didn't even bother with those to begin with and that's what got them into trouble. Almost all of the top torrents every day would be obscure releases from independent labels. I remember Merge and Matador Records had a very good relationship with the site. I remember often when an album would leak there was a representative from the label who would tell the admin of oink if he thought that it had leaked too early. And everytime, he would instantly take the torrent down. It was a very respectable process. I remember this happening with Dinosaur Jr. and Cocorosie.

The point is though, that the site was a great outlet of distribution for many of these smaller labels and artists. It was almost like free advertising for them and certainly helped these artists sell out shows or become more blogged about. I remember even some users on oink would put up their albums for people to download since it was such an easy method of distribution.

This is what really irks me about the entire takedown. Oink wasn't a site with bad intentions, you really got the feeling that the people on the site cared about the music and were willing to support it in other ways. For these small labels and artists, it's a significant blow for their ability to be noticed.
