If the election were held today, PJ bleats, six months is an eternity in politics.

Obama poll numbers may be under 50%, but its a world of a lot better than GOP poll numbers.

No, they can't replace Obama very easilly. The best they could do would be to (1) impeach him which means to accuse him of a crime and then (2) convict him of that crime. #1 is fairly easy, but #2 is very difficult.

Having a republican congress and a democrat president is probably the best combination that we've ever had. The 1990s were fantastic in large part because of that combination. The president can still do a lot in the way of a veto. The republicans won't get anything they want unless they compromise and give the president what he wants. In a way, that is even easier for Obama to get his way with republicans in control of congress than with democrats in control. Democrats have a habit of bickering, delay, and watering down their bills when they are in control of congress. Suddenly if republicans are in control, then there is only one democrat (Obama) who gets to control what needs to be in the bills for the republicans to get their way.

That worked in the 90s because Clinton was a centrist Democrat at heart.

Obama is a liberal Democrat who would never support the types of things that a Republican congress would want to do.

For example: most of the Democrats in congress voted against welfare reform and half of the Democrat Senators voted against it. Obama would never support this type of bill like Clinton did.

If Republicans take over control of congress it will be a battle to the death for the next 2 years.

I'm not going to make a substantive contribution to this thread, but I will say I'm really sick of everything becoming "Obama's Katrina". It just shows how butthurt most Republicans remain about the fact that Katrina was a huge PR disaster for Bush. The oil spill and Katrina aren't even remotely comparable in terms of what the government can do to actually mitigate a disaster.

Yea really, one is a man made disaster and another if a freaking hurricane!!!

The problem is both cases is that people expect the government to be able to perform a miracle.

One good thing about being a conservative is that you expect our government to fail so when it happens you aren't too surprised. Liberals on the other hand expect government to be perfect which is why you get so much crying from them during events like Katrina and the oil spill.
