NEW ORLEANS, LA (KTRK) -- At least four people have been injured in a fire at an oil drilling platform off the coast of Louisiana, and two workers are reported missing.

There was some sort of explosion at a Black Elk Energy Company oil and natural gas platform 20 nautical miles southeast of Grand Isle, LA. It is not clear if it is still burning.

When are we JUST going to re-engineer the entire economy?

It doesn't have to happen overnight, but we could start making a big push in that direction. Peak oil is forecast to start in 2015 so just sitting around screaming economy is pretty fucking stupid at this point, don't you think?

We can't do anything about it. If we fine them they will just increase the price of gas.

Got it? Just getting a jump on the Republican talking points.

As much as I think we should be working towards something more sustainable, peak oil has had a rolling start date or claimed to be already happening for a very long time now.

Problem due to union welder using wrong cutting torch on oil pipe.

From original link (updated)

So how did union work past test . To do said work . Knowing right equiment to use is part of certifacation . I was iron worker and many things one needs to know. These cerified platform works need to know much more . Hope the man who caused lives so he can explain why he used wrong torch . If he didn't know . Than he was wrongly certified and a man slaughter charge should be given to who ever certified that worker.

It appears they didn't understand what was required to perform the job safely or chose to ignore the requirements.

At the time of the fire, the workers were cutting a 75-foot long pipe that was 3 inches in diameter and contained as much as 75 gallons of product, Hoffman said.

The process for cutting the pipe calls for a “cold-cutting device,” or a non-sparking tool, Hoffman said. However, he confirmed that a cutting torch was used instead, which ignited the vapors in the pipe.
