Oil Changes In Europe

So, reason why in Europe you make an oil change at around 15,000-16,000 km intervals as opposed to 5000-8000 ones in NA?
 
Smaller and more reliable engines?

I'm pretty sure you should change oil based on the car you have not the continent you live on though...
 
well using regular priced oil, you get unnecessary particles and grain flowing through the system at 2K miles after a fresh oil change.

super synthetic stuff, the problem with supposedly longer lasting oil changes like this, you gotta be certain that what's bleeding in and out of your parts are good enough to last, overall.

but you never know, maybe it's a scam to keep small businesses up and about?
 
I change my oil based on what the computer in my van tells me. I have 2700miles on the current oil change, and the Oil Life indicator is at 72%.

Smaller engines = higher revs = a need for more frequent oil changes
 
Most cars have a recommended interval longer than 3k miles. My Grand Cherokee's is 7500 mi, and 3500 mi if your usage is harder on the engine. I change every 3000 because of all the stop and go.

Just about everyones driving is consider extreme conditions.
 
Well I know for a fact that a 94 Sentra can go 35K miles on the oil installed by the manufacturer before the engine seizes. Some chick that I worked with back in 96 drove her car without ever changing the oil until it just seized on her.

No, you have that bassakwards. Just about everyone is driving under normal conditions. Ask the manufacturer directly and they say the vast majority are in NORMAL conditions. That is the definition of "normal", as in typical for most customers. But, to save themselves from lawsuits, the manufacturers make the manual read as if everyone was under severe conditions.

My Civic is 10,000 miles (16,000 km) between oil changes according to the US manual. Everyone here just freaks out. 3,000 miles for most cars now is just a waste of time and money.
 
Because a quart (liter) of synthetic oil in places like Germany cost 20 euros (including tax). You can get them cheaper on eBay, but they're no-name brands.

On another note, the heating oil used in homes/businesses has a dye in it, where if you use it in your car, the exhaust is red, easy to alert the authorities since its illegal in Europe, might be the same way here, not sure.

Probably unnecessary to change the oil that often since I can't offroad these days. Maybe I'll go to 5000.

I'd think Europeans would be more likely to use trains, or just walk. Maybe he doesn't realize that most of us Americans have to drive EVERYWHERE, and that driving on the highway is more stop and go than a city.

i think oil changes are needed more frequently because of the crap-ass oil filters...they do not last that long! silly cardboard technology 😛
 
How about we measure our oil changes in miles and Euros do it in kilometers? 7500 miles is around 12 km.
Your average GM car says oil change at 7500 miles.

Edit: They don't recommend a different oil change interval for the same engine sold in another country.

Add in that some cars recommend 10k interval using synthetic and there you have it....there is no difference.
 
I change mine at about 6000ish, mixed highway and city, fairly even because of rush hour. throw in a monthly autocross... and my UOA still reads I could go longer. I feel better if I just stick w/ ~6000 miles. I use synthetic for piece of mind from autocrossing.
