Is every 3k overdoing it?

Why's my sarcasmometer acting funny? Is this another one of those stealthy YACT's?

Check your owners manual.

Generally, as long as you check it every ~500 miles to make sure that the oil level is topped off, you can safely go 5k miles no problems.

And yes, this topic shows up at least once a week I think.

My Toyota owners manual says 7k for normal driving, and 5k for more agressive/more city driving :p

My car has scheduled oil changes every 10K miles, which seems to be pretty common for German cars. Most mechanics who fix domestic cars cringe when I tell them that, though.

whats the point of using a synthetic if your not taking advantage of the longer life of the oil?

Because it offers better protection when your engine spins 7k on a regular basis.

2.5k on my 94 Dakota 3.9L V6, 100k miles. O/F every other change.
3.5k on her 01 Camero 3.8 V6, 44k miles. O/F every change.

Both get driven allot of short trips=no real warm up time. The Dodge's oil starts smelling
of gasoline at 2k. Its a cast iron motor with a large capacity cooling system and takes forever to get up to operating temp. and yes it has a good t-stat in it.

Smog laws have pushed manufactures into reducing water jacket capacity to facilitate
a rapid warm up. Thats a big plus for oil life. I use a decent brand of 10/30 in both,
I just dump it often.

Hopefully my next car(no more PUs) will be worthy of synthetic oil :)

My new CR-V's oil should be changed every 10k miles under "normal" driving conditions, 5k under "severe" conditions.

On VW Passat 1992, the gas engines must have oil changed at 15 000 km (about 10k miles). However, as soon as I reach 10 000 km with the oil, I'll change it

Calin

P.S. The turbo-diesel engines have a smaller mileage for changing oil

My 2001 Honda Accord is 7,500 for normal or 3,750 miles for severe conditions. I typically change mine about every 5,000 or right before I go on a long trip.

I do 5k personally. Any more than that I know is a waste of oil/time/money. Many would say that 5k is overkill. BTW that's synthetic in the maxima, and dino in the sentra (don't care about that one as much!).
