Oil change question...

So I did my oil change today, I tried something different though, I let the car sit overnight and drained it stone cold. I'm thinking that I'd get more of the dirty oil out this way vs doing it with warm oil, what say AT garage? good idea?/makes no difference?/bad idea?. I also went with Walmart brand 100% synthetic, it's actually cheaper than name-brand conventional dino oil..

Its probably because its 50/50 water/oil mix...
I always warm up the car a bit before changing the oil but haven't put much thought into draining it overnight since i wan't to finish it the same day.

if you wana be leet, you change it hot. pour a little oil through to run the channel to the plug clean, and some even drop the pan and clean the inside of the pan before filling. but my opinion for an average non-race car.. doesn't matter hot or cold, as long as its done without damage.

I would however highly suggest not using any automotive junk from walmart. It may not all be bad, but theres better ways throughout your life to save money. Not to mention good item or not, if you ever worked at or know anyone whos ever worked at walmart or a similar big box store, you'd never buy anything from them again.. unless its something non functional/unimportant such as a 'chair' or something else to rest your as s on. Tho ofcourse it doesn't need to be a bigbox store to have shitty stuff and policies, and there maybe exceptions but its a good rule of thumb.

There is a large following of Super-Tech oil users at BITOG also. It's decent stuff, or at least used to be as i haven't kept up with it.

From everything I've heard/read/seen, WM's Super-Tech is currently made by three suppliers, Exxon/Mobil, Shell, and Warren. Suppliers seem to vary by region and demand.

This is not always true, it really depends on the packer and supplier. I can say that my local packing facility packages strictly for walmart and their supplier is exclusive. Every other seller has to buy it elsewhere which means their supplier is unknown.

Why would you get more oil out with cold oil? It doesn't flow as well. Warming up the engine also mixes any debris that have settled in various pockets in the engine with the oil, so they actually come out of the engine, rather than just sit where they are.

Any manuals I have ever seen also tell you to warm the engine before changing.

Yea, I may have made a mistake there, I don't think It's a major worry though, at least I'm keeping it changed and avoid Fram filters..

That may well be true but how it's distributed is irrelevant as to what's in the bottle, I refuse to believe Castrol sold at Walmart is inferior to Castrol sold at Advance auto.

Ran (should also say running) the Walmart Supertech synthetic in 3 different cars no problem period...

2005 Corolla S from 7500 miles to 106K miles
2010 Kia Soul! from 5000 miles to 34K miles
2012 Honda Civic EX 5000 miles to now with 17K miles

Change it every 7500 miles always looks and feels great and the oil samples always come back excellent too...

If they made a diesel version I would use it in the Dmax for sure...😉

no point in asking if your picking and choosing opinions you only want to believe. my suggestion, go work for them, then make up your own opinion on what may or maynot be in there stuff.. if your not a redneck tho i think your choice afterward won't even have anything to do with whats in there stuff. I personally would rather give a few more dollars to a company that i trust and that does not treat there employees and customers like mentally disabled kindergardeners.

walmart stuff is often 'watered down' as someone already pointed out. May not be diff than the stuff at Advanced. but walmart stuff is more likely than not to be different than what your getting at Nu-way or Napa, or any local reputable parts store in your area.

Now that is funny stuff... Like to hear how you can explain this about GM engines (for sure about V6 Vs 4cyl and stress)...? Only thing that cost me is the time to catch the sample of oil nothing more, my company does it for free and I'm to guess your one of those that believes you must pay through the nose to get the best...? Did you even read the link provided...? 5W-30 oil comparisons Might want to do some comparing then look at the bottom line... We have and oil analysis does not lie because it is real world numbers not just a website or hearsay...

Damn 30+ years as a mechanic and work on $200K+ machines for a living and guess I know nothing about oil...? "nothing personal" D:

I use Spectro 4 full synthetic in the Ducati (it's like $70 for 4 liters at the Ducati dealer, might have to see where I can get it online). For the Toyota I just take it to the dealership and they put whatever they put in it. It requires synthetic too actually.

That's absolutely insane, do you think these companies spend millions on R+D, marketing, then have different versions of their product for different stores? I guess the Cap'n Crunch sold at Walmart probably has less crunch-berries than the boxes sold at Kroger.. 😵

Wow, you automotive knowledge is so lacking I don't know where to begin..first off a GM pushrod V6 3.5L only makes 200HP, 3.5L sized V6's from Nissan, Honda, Toyota were making 250+HP way back in the early 2000's, this is because they were twin-cam four valve per cylinder design's, GM in 2008 finally went that route with the re-design of the Malibu and upgraded the V6 to a modern one with 255HP. There's a trade-off involved, I get very good MPG with my "old-school" engine with it's simple, cool-running design, on the flip side 50-60 more HP is quite noticeable in a mid-sized sedan and HP sells cars. Secondly one can't "water-down" motor oil, water and oil don't mix too well LOL. Go ahead and shop for your Pennsoil at Sears, Target, Auto-zone but IT'S THE EXACT SAME PRODUCT THAT IS ON THE SHELF AT WALMART! anyone suggesting because they pay crappy wages means they sell "watered-down" name-brand oil is just nuts..

This doesn't make sense. Just for a company doing such business would be a distribution nightmare and not to mention lawsuit that will follow if somehow the oil was accidentally shipped to other distributor. Furthermore the brand that is at walmart should be label as walmart additive. When you compare two container they are identical parts store vs walmart.

There are more transparencies now the way businesses are run. So the old ways of running a business will not work unless you are in china. Even that is changing

I never made the claim that walmart oils were "watered down".

Furthermore, I guess if I must provide a link and if it isn't on the internet it must not be true. Fair enough, it isn't true then. You win and i'll bow out in defeat.
