Do valve spring OD's matter to oil consumption?

Should we call you Mr. Obtuse, or do you have a point?
My point is you shouldn't make blanket statements and assume everyone knows what you are talking about. And plus, I'm curious as to what is actually toleranced to microns that has an effect on oil consumption.

Anyway, my 2005 burns about 1L per 1000 km. I guess 10 years ago there were too many microns, or maybe not enough.

Toyota recommended 10,000 miles back in the 1980s, when oil offered much less protection.

Why would i check the levels if my car does it? My first car would light up the oil light if I took corners too fast because i was losing/burning oil.

Perfect post of the attitude to *not* adopt ladies and gentleman.

That's the 'Low Oil Pressure' light, not the "Low Oil" light.

Your car was showing the light because the oil pressure dropped during corners.

Incidentally, yes, low oil levels could lead to low oil pressure, but the light is not there as a substitute for regularly checking oil levels.

Check your oil levels regularly.

You wouldn't say "why would I need to check my coolant levels? I can see right here my car is not overheating" would you?

From everything I've read, the oil indicator for the car is:

Oil Life % = ((10000 - miles driven since last change) / 10000) * 100

Sounds dumb given that even the most basic economy cars factor in cold weather starts, RPMs, etc. but nobody that I know of has found differently.

My 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer definitely has a oil life monitor that isn't just mileage driven. I drove it 50 miles each way to and from work each day for two years. I would change the oil when it got to 50% which was almost 6K miles. Now, I'm not commuting in it at all. I'm running synthetic in it and changing it yearly or whenever the oil life reaches 10%. The approximate miles vary between 4.5K-6K now. It may not be too complex, but it does seem to take into account the number of cold starts, and whether or not the oil temperature comes up enough to burn off condensation and other contaminants. BTW, I'm at 196K miles on this vehicle with the only major drivetrain issue being a chipped spider gear in the rear end.

I don't usually check any fluids under the hood except winshield washer fluid. Most things degrade slowly over time and at oil changes they will warn me if there are issues. granted I make mistakes and forgot to replace my air filter after being told. It was over 100K miles and blacker than black but surprisingly my engine was still running.

Cylinder bores, valve seats, valves, valve guides - etc. Pretty much everything to do with oil consumption is tolerenced in microns now.

Your car does not check the oil level.

You never want the oil level so low as to trigger your oil pressure light when cornering.

Never.

If the OP light comes on at all, you need to stop driving ASAP and add oil.

You will find this in your Mazda owner's manual.

You have to be trolling to think your OP light is an oil level light.

Mechanic did the oil change. Recommended I stay between 5000-6500 miles for oil changes due to extreme temps for ohio.

Also I noticed they did 5.5 quarts. Most forums say 5.7. Is this ok?

check the dipstick and if this is not satisfactory just add more or tell them to add.

Ohio does not have extreme temperatures. Death Valley does. Alaska does. Ohio does not.

I wouldn't trust Ford, they're putting turbos on everything-change the oil at 10k miles?
Ford vehicles are still catching fire because of their faulty brake light switch design.
Who's to say in a few years-oops you should have changed your oil at 5k miles?

I would say -8 this morning was pretty extreme relative to the average temp of the country as whole.

It's nowhere near the extremes that the vehicles are tested in to verify the oil change interval information. Which is specifically why I mentioned Death Valley and Alaska - those are two locations where the testing takes place.

Well then I hope you don't trust ANY of the automakers, because anyone with their head above ground for the last 15 years knows each and every one has had multiple major safety related recalls.

And you don't trust them because they are putting turbos on everything? Really?
