can someone clarify this for me, as ppl always argue about how 3000 mi is marketing scheme, etc...

[edit] more info:
it's 6 months old, 15K miles on it.

I've heard when the car is brand new you're supposed to change it more often, but I've never owned a new car. For a used car that's no big deal at all.

Check your owners manual and see when they reccomend the first oil change. There should be one for severe service intervals and regular intervals.

Edit: Change it at the normal intervals, unless you do a lot of stop and go driving (like sity driving). Stop and go really is harsh on the oil compared to freeway driving. At least once a week take a drive on the freeway to get the oil to normal operating temps.

Check your owners manual.

I'm 99.999% certain you're okay though. The last 3 cars I have owned all said 7,500 miles (Mitsu, Acura, Subaru) and 2 of those were turbocharged. Check your oil though, as oil consumption increases in most cars with the age of the oil. I suggest not going past 5,000 miles between changes.

For a brand new car, you're suppose to change your oil like after 2000 miles. Since you're at 4,000 miles, you should change it right away. Your engine will last longer if you change it every 3,000 miles.

The whole 3000 mile thing is really old frmo old engines with old oil. It's not applicable with today's cars and oil but everyone just keeps doing it anyway. My 99 Grand Am nly needs it about every 6500 miles as do most other cars. But since an Oil Change is so much profit percentage for dealerships, they keep telling you the old 3000 mile rule, even though you're just wasting your money.

Just wait when you have to do your 60k service (Don't take me literally of course). Tires and rotation, brakes, spark plugs, air filter, transmission fluid, battery, radiator flush, AC recharge, and oil. Spend 700-900 dollars on that baby.

I'm almost 1000 miles over for my oil change on my 04 subaru.

I did change the first one right on when it was said. Mostly to get the break in crud out.
My next change will come when I have the time.

Most manufacturers recommend 5000 mile oil changes. Some even more. And that's already with extra pad so they don't keep replacing engines under warranty. So even if you go a little past the manufacturer's recommendation, you should be ok. This 3000 mile interval comes from people who sell you oil.

I have never heard of an engine breaking because the oil changes were done at the manufacturer's recommendation.

Yep, put Mobil 1 synthetic in and go 7,000 miles. Mobil 1 is the only true synthetic beside AMSoil which is not distributed in the mass market. Synthetic will run you double $ for each change but it's less of a hassle and much better for you engine.

Some new cars such as some Mercedes and BMWs recommend the FIRST oil change at 15K miles.

I aim for eevry 5-8000 miles on the oil change. If you do alot of short drives, run a little less. Having the oil heat up will burn some of the impurities out of it that it collects, thus it'll last a bit longer. Anyways, I've ALWAYS shot for 5k changfes, and have been through....3 cars now. And none have failed due to engine failure, except 1 which wasnt caused by the oil change interval, but rather something fialing and causing loss of oil pressure which in turn roasted the engine (Damned dummy lights. Hate'm)

After 5kmiles without changing my oil, the oil looked more like tar coming out of my car. Common sense, I say that's bad.
