oil change at 6400 miles on a new car, bad or ok?

I bought the car in october 06. It is a 2007 honda civic coupe. First oil change was supposed to be at 5k miles but the oil % guage didn't reach 15% and the light come on till 5,600miles. I might be leaving for vegas tonight which will add another 800-900miles both ways easy. It is a new car and this would be its first oil change. How bad would it be if i drove to vegas tonight?

I don't think it would be too bad at all really.

If you really want to be sure, just get a new filter, fill it with new oil and replace the old one, and you should be good until you can get back and get it changed.

Just change it to be sure, just to be on the safe side, it'll probably be fine but i'd stick to the first oil change guidelines personally, especially if its a long trip.

Shouldn't you change it sooner as its a new motor?

Honda's schedule says 5000 or 7500 miles depending on the type of service.

A lot of new Mercedes and BMWs have first oil change scheduled at 15,000 miles.

M3 has the first change @ 1500.

it is supposed to be 3k? but they told me the first would be 5k

What does the manual say? Go by that and not what the service technician tells you. Most of them still tell everyone to come in every 3k miles which is the biggest scam around these days.

I do it every 3k, why? So if I ever sell it I can go "Ya changed every 3k miles" so the morons who fall for that crap get all happy about it.

Which is a completely moot point since he doesn't have a BMW or Mercedes...

The dealer told me that my 07 Accord EX would probably not require an oil change till 7k plus. He said depending on how the car is driving wait for the car to notify you when it needs the oil changed. I got 2k on it now and it says 80% on the oil gauge.

gotta love hondas..........

I'd still change the oil at 3k, for that first oil change. It's not that expensive.

Every time I've gone 5k or more miles between oil changes the oil is low, and because I do my own oil changes it doesn't cost that much more to just change it all and replace the filter instead of topping it off and checking it all the time so I do it every 3k miles.

The only thing I would be worried about if I was running it for really long times without an oil change is the oil filter getting clogged to the point it fails. This is more of a worry on older cars however.
