Ohio to limit union stranglehold on taxpayers

Looks like it's going to the Governor who will sign it today. It's a broad reaching, budget saving move that will prevent Unions from demanding outrageous benefits, prevent them from automatically collecting dues and using it to fund democrats. People will now not be FORCED to join a union in the public sector. They can still negotiate raises but raises and promotions MUST be based on merit and performance, just like the "real" world.

The measure affects safety workers, teachers, nurses and a host of other government personnel. It allows unions to negotiate wages but not health care, sick time or pension benefits. It gets rid of automatic pay increases and replaces them with merit raises or performance pay. Workers would also be banned from striking.

Can you smell the change in the air? What's funny is all the bused in union goons are so busy over in WI, that Ohio just went ahead and took care of business. Similar bills are moving through other states.

Yes. it will do nothing to really affect the budget (money "saved" will be spent on something else) and it's merely a bill designed to bust unions.

If the Teachers Union decided to go on strike Oh would be in a world of hurt if they fired them all and tried to find suitable replacements, especially with the new Bill.

Who is "we the people"? Sounds like "we the people" spoke last fall and they want govt to control the public unions from costing taxpayers.

If they spend the money saved from this bill on something else. How is it the fault of this bill? And is that the worst thing anyways? Using your logic we should never cut the defense budget because the money will just be spent somewhere else.
 
All this is going to do is make the Teaching as a career even less appelaing than it has been for the last 10 or so years thus hurting the quality of education even more.

A bill to bust PUBLIC unions -- that's a good thing. They got way too much of a strangle-hold on the taxpayer dollar. I'm all for private unions. If a company can't afford it, they either renegotiate or go out of business. In public unions, it is either renegotiate or raise taxes. And we all see how much they love to renegotiate the big sticking points. I admit, they do renegotiate on smaller items but all hell breaks loose if you try and touch pensions or medical.

Once again, problem not found.

Unions were fine and good when they actually helped protect workers. Now they are about extorting companies and employers.
US law covers all safety related issues in the work place. There is no need for unions now.
They drive the price up of all US produced goods and services.
As is pointed out time and time again,
Why should these government workers get benefits and retirement packages that are far more generous than the people that aren't government workers.
Tax payers shouldn't be taxed to pay for government workers to have a better life than the tax payer.
EDIT: I think the biggest fear unions and supports of unions have, is now they will be forced to actually EARN their paycheck instead of getting a paycheck.

Teacher unions already do this. Who would want to get into teaching when your lack of seniority gets you fired instead of your performance? And how does that not hurt education when poor performing teachers survive because they have senority?

How so? Now that pay raises will be based on merit, the good teachers have the opportunity to make even more. All that's going to do is get better teachers to go to Ohio. Oh, and they don't have to pay union dues.

You really think this is going to harm the quality of teachers? Because the opposite will happen.

Only the bad ones. Just TRY to fire a teacher, try it. We had a few here that showed up drunk most of the time and called in sick the other half. That went on for a year and when they finally fired them (well, technically "not renew your contract for next year"), out comes the union to sue the school to get her reinstated.

Face it, if you get merit based pay you will attract better teachers. That's how it works in the real world.
