There must be some kind of adhesive to keep the structure intact

Of course it's possible, it's how the ancient folk built. If they are wedge shaped at all then it disperses the weight correctly.
This arch has no mortar or adhesive.

Yeah, they probably had to use an intermediate structure too.

I doubt there is enough pressure to force them out. Gravity (their own weight) is pulling them down.
