Oh yeah, driving home should be fun!

It's snowing where I am now, roads between here & home are icy & some are flat out closed. Plus I live on top of a steep hill. So if I make it UP the hill, chances are I probably won't make it down in the morning.

BTW, the "fun" comment was sarcastic.

ppppft, combine single digit temperatures with a -30 degree windchill and refrozen rain, you got St.Louis. It wasn't this cold yesterday! :Q

Nope, no cell phone. My mom's being paranoid, wants me to take light rail home & leave my car here. No way in hell I'm doing that, though.

Yeah, Drive carefully man. My Math teacher today told us that he almost got in to an accedent (long story). The same happened to a friend of mine. It's pretty dangerous, drive carefully. This weather sucks... 🙁

It was supposed to get icy here tonight, but they changed the weather forecast thank God. Be careful driving home, and take it slow. Maybe you will get a snow day tomorrow.

vi_edit, you don't get snow much where you live do you?

Where I live, that is considered nothing. 😛

My grandmother calls, asks for the weather, and it is fairly nice if it is like that. 🙂

Viper GTS, that sucks man, icy roads are worse than snow any day.

The cold is negated by a heating system in your car Killbat.

Where I live, they close school on the following conditions: 10"+ of snow that hasn't had time to be cleared (meaning, the majority of it occurred after 1AM) and/or it is -25`F windchill.

Slackers. 😉

GF...

Snow days don't count when you get attendance points for them. :|

Anyway, I'm outta here. I guess we'll see how fast I learn.

Zippy, that was taken at 2:00 PM today, it's now 8:00 PM and it's still snowing. Couple that with 40 MPH winds and you have some pretty nasty drifting.

40mph winds, sweet, reminds me of home...oh, wait, I am at home! :Q

😉

How much snow on the ground now vi_edit? (I'm done putting down your aparent lack of experience w/ snow btw. 🙂)

here my snowbanks by the end of the winder are about 2.5 meters high(plus whatever melted during the winter)
our bus fishtails whenever it hits any curve because the board won't give them snow tires.. it slid 4' to a stop the other morning, good thing i wasn't another 2 feet closer 😛

drive carefully viper 🙂

I'm in Iowa for crying out loud 😛 🙂 Anything over 8" is considered a decent "snowfall".

Right now it's hard to say, some places have 4 inches, others have 4 feet. I'd say that there was probably about 8" of actual accumulation though.

BTW - if I want "real snow" I'll head back to my girlfriends home up in the Black Hills. Up there it's not uncommon at all to have a foot and a half dumped on you overnight 🙂

I'll be moving up there in a few years to relish that fun feature of winter 🙂

LOL. 8", it's respectable. 😉

Where I live we don't have that much, but that is because a lot has melted in the last two days because of a warm front moving through. It's HOT...40`F is the highest temp! 😉 No, I don't live in Canada btw, the good ol' US of A. Where I live, for a while, before el nino, was the snowiest place in america... :disgust:

I live near Syracuse, NY. Buffalo has gotten hit REALLY hard this year!

Snow days don't count when you get attendance points for them

Oh that does suck, I was hoping you would just get a day off to relax.

Ouch Buffalo, they get those..can't remember the name, something to do with "lake" lakesnows or something, basically when a bunch of moisture gets sucked up off of the great lakes and just takes a huge dump on the first thing it hits...which happens to usually be Buffalo.

Bah, that was a joke. Roads were totally clear until the last 1/2 mile up my hill, where it went instantly from black asphalt to pure white. Let off the gas, upshifted, & floored it, & still couldn't make the wheels spin. Tomorrow should be interesting, though.

Look!
We might get snow only one day this week! That's a good thing in my case 😉 I'm hoping to keep the snow to a bare minimum

vi_edit, lake effect snow storms. Yep, we get those too where I live.

Basically it is a cP (continental Polar) air mass that is coming from the frigid areas of canada down my way (coriolis effect and surface winds direct it here). As it passes over the great lakes, it picks up a WHOLE LOT of water. Now, this raises the dew point temperature because there is a higher humidity, therefore, it takes less cold to release all of that moisture as rain over us.

"Why do I know that?" you may ask, well, I am on the Science Olympiad team for my school (we are #4 in the nation) and one of the events I have to compete in is Dynamic Planet, which deals with weather and forecasting. 🙂

Ha!

Ugh for Thanksgiving, the drive home from Pittsburgh to NYC was a nightmare. For the first two hours, there was some crazy snow/sleet. At times I couldn't see anything because of snow drifts getting blown off the side of the mountains. And don't even get me started on those salting and sanding trucks. I tried passing one and got sprayed so bad I had to stomp on the brakes and just wait it out until the road widened. Hopefully the drive home next week won't be so bad...
