To all you idiots saying bees are indangered:

Bees aren't native to Australia. So the eco system and agricultural systems aren't reliant on them. So there is not shortage of there here.

How do Australian crops and plants get pollinated Rocksteady?

Not sure about flowers mate. I think they rely on wind transporting the pollen.

I don't thing any country relys on bees for agricultural crops do they? Don't we have moden methods?

Well the reason a ton of bees died was because of Australian bees.

They introduced a virus to the rest of the worlds bees that kills all other species except the Australian version of bees.

Yes they were not native but since their introduction in 1822 the majority of plants now are pollinated by bees since many of the crops are not native to Australia also.

Completely incorrect. Honeybees are not in the least aggressive. You can walk directly up to a hive, stand there for an hour and never get stung. (I fell asleep three feet away from my FIL's beehives the other day, was there for three hours and the bees from 6 hives completely ignored me.) Nothing like yellow jackets or other aggressive insects.

You can also VERY easily move a hive. If you move the queen, the hive follows. Anytime you want to get rid of honeybees, call a beekeeper. They'll come remove them for free.

Bees swarm (as in the second link) when there are too many for a single hive and they have a new queen. They are kinda scary looking but again, very harmless. You see how even when that guy knocked them down they just fell in a big ball to the ground. They swarm around the queen and protect her while they look for a new home. A beekeeper can easily walk up, grab the whole ball, and take them away.

Don't hurt the honeybees! They've very important, and they're suffering a population decline right now! They're also some of the nicest, non-aggressive insects you'll ever meet.

Other insects or other bees, just not honey bees. There are ALL kinds of pollinators, some plants are even self pollinating like tomatoes.

They are bees and far from harmless.

Not to mention they were preventing him from having a cookout so they earned the death.

Also, the nut farmers in California would be dooooomed without bees. I believe something like 90% of almonds are pollinated by bees.

You can "rent" a single box of bees to a farmer for almond pollination for around $100 now.
Bees are lucky.

If I want to go out pollinating lovely young flowers, I have to pay for it.

Sometimes with money, and sometimes with jailtime. :(

too bad...we really need our bees right now. couldnt he have somehow given them to a bee handler or something?

normally i dont give a shit, but the bee population is pretty fucked up.

He could have contacted a local beekeeper and I'm sure they would have been happy to come and get those hives. Given all the publicity about the honey bee hive collapses it would have been the right thing to do.

How many people actually have local beekeepers? When I was at UIUC, we were in the middle of farmland and so there were apiaries in the area, but there was never anything of the sort in the suburbs where I grew up. And would an exterminator really harvest the bees? The few times I have seen it done on TV (Dirty Jobs, some Vermin Extermination reality show), the exterminators killed most of the bees and just removed the hive.

My in-laws live in the middle of a subdivision in a Seattle suburb and keep 6 hives. The neighbors haven't noticed. *shrug*

yeah, it's an oooooold video, but the music adds to it (YMMV) and it's appropriate.

What a waste. I would have tried to kill them in a non-toxic fashion and taken the honey for myself.

The guy should have sucked on that fogger himself. What a retard. The nest could have been relocated.
