Oh.. the beauty of rounded cables

This might be old news to most of you but I just put together my first system with round IDE and floppy cables. They are so worth the money. I put a little extra effort into hiding the power as well and the resulting system is a joy to behold (for me anyway). I put some pictures on my site if you want to check out the result LINKAGE.

btw, after taking the photos I powered up the system and without even going to the bios it booted off a WIN2k Cd, formatted and installed the OS. Rare (for me anyway) to have a newly built system come to life so easily.

hey, lookin' good!

I hope that the rounded cables work for you --> I have heard of people complaining about data integrity errors with rounded cables, so I stuck with the neatly folded IDE cable route. Your setup looks pretty sweet though. Good job!

Very nice. did u just use electrical tape to make the power cords look so neat? I have the exact same setup u do. Just a hint: u have 4 case fans in there, not 3 😉 The 4th is behind the lower hd cage. When u remove the cage, u can attatch a 4th fan to the back of the cage.

Very nice indeed, Mine looks fairly similar.
I don't know if anyone has ever done any tests on data integrity, but I have had no problems...
May just be a knee-jerk reaction of the computing purists 🙂

Soyo board eh? So sweet, only gripe is the powercord connection placed in difficult pos.
Folded (have home-made meself) are a bliss for airflow!

Wow! That's a neat lookin' rig. I also went with rounded cables after being frustrated with the flat ones. Go rounded! I noticed that u took care of the extra power connectors coming off ur Enermax ps. That was a pain for me 'cause the length and amount of power connectors it has. Great job!

After going with rounded cables in my most recent comp, I'd never go back. I haven't noticed any data integrity errors or any problems whatsoever (which was a concern for me) so I think I'm going to stick with them since they make your case look clean and are so much easier to work with than the flat ribbons.

The quality of the ones I got also seems to be better than any of the flat ones I've had in the past...

I like reading your site diary hehe. Very nice to hear other peoples' thoughts and experiences when buying and building a system. The pics are nice too. 😀 The rounded cables definitely do make your case look cleaner. And it also adds a unique appeal to the eye 😉

Actually I feel a little guilty getting compliments on the power connectors. Even though I did spend some time routing them, they are really just hidden behind the drive bays. In that enclosure there is room between the drives and the side of the case. So I just routed all the power behind (from the camera view) the drives and pulled one connector around where it was needed.

As far as any issues with the round cables, I have had no trouble so far. The first system booted right off the CDrom on the very first attempt. I finished the second system today. I used ghost to clone the first drive and the second system booted straight to Windows the very first time as well. I am really surprised how smoothly both systems have gone together.

bonger78: Yeah, I know there are mounts for 4 case fans but only three came with my case. Also, if you mount the fan in the HD chassis you are forced to have the HD hang way out the backside, almost over the motherboard. That would be great for cooling but would look so untidy.

frysad: Very nice job. I've done alot with rounded cable, both homemade and store bought. Data loss was never an issue. However, after reading that article in Maximum PC a couple of months ago I became intrigued with the potential for folded cables. They take a bit more work but I think the end result looks better and is less intrusive than rounded cables. You can see a couple of examples of what I mean here.

Folded cables! I kinda chuckle when I see IDE cables for like $20 each, I've been folding / wrapping mine for a while now. Doesn't look as purty as the blue/yellow ones but my main goal with building a PC is to build it so I never have to see the inside again 🙂
