Oh that crazy Marion Barry does his thing again.

But why should I care about these arbitrary legal lines?

Why care about laws at all, right?

When the law is stupid, only stupid people look to the law as a basis for evaluation.
To put it slightly differently, looking to a stupid law as a standard for evaluating actions makes one stupid.

So why have laws at all then? You say law A is stupid, so it is ignored, another says law B is stupid, so it is ignored. There will always be someone who says a certain law is stupid...so all laws should be ignored. Pretty stupid.

Again, it is not a hard concept. Violating a criminal law makes a person a criminal. Your agreement with the law is irrelevant to the situation.

I am not bringing up the logistics of prostitution. Fact is, you are in a hotel room with a hooker smoking crack, your cred tends to suffer regardless of the debated right to exist of the "world's oldest profession".

I know this is intednded to be a rhetorical question, but I like it more in its non-rhetorical form.

This is not what I said at all. I was talking about looking to the law to justify its value as a basis for evaluation. Obeying stupid laws is not necessarily stupid. (Obviously it can be quite wise at times.) Believing that stupid laws should be perceived as valuable standards simply because they are law is stupid.
Again, it is not a hard concept. Violating a criminal law makes a person a criminal. Your agreement with the law is irrelevant to the situation.
Fortunately I don't much care about the category of "criminal" except as a matter of trivia.

There are many criminal activities I loathe, but I do not loathe them because a collection of corrupt and convoluted words says they are "criminal", I loathe them because they are loathesome.

Perhaps his credibility on issues of moral regulation would suffer, but why is there this rush to dismiss every lunacy of Mr. Barry as somehow being connected to the fact that his prefered recreational intoxicants happen to be on an arbitrary list?

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I agree with you on following and perceiving the laws part.

To me, anyone who is supposed to be a leader in the executive branch, whose job it is to enforce the laws, should not be purposefully committing felons, no matter how stupid the law may be.

I can't say it is personal experience, but the general opinion is that people who make decisions to use such a cheap and destructive substance such as that are usually not the ones you go to look for advice on many things.

He may be a rare individual, almost storybook in nature, that has the wisdom we can all live by despite his uses and abuses, but a roll of the dice say I have a better chance at the MegaMillions.

I don't have a problem with more black businesses, but why does he want to kick out asians. .. "dirty" hardly
Because they aren't black, because they are successful (thus crowding out potential black-owned businesses), and because they come to this country, often speaking almost no English, and succeed, largely in spite of government rather than because of it.

Most of all he says it because his constituents expect him to say it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not arguing that Marion Barry is some kind of crackhead genius. The man is a whackjob to be sure. I just wonder why people are so quick to say things along the lines of "Yeah he says crazy stuff, but he's just a crackhead." The thing is a lot of the stuff he says is actually representative of his voters. The fact that he happens to engage in vices that are unfashionable uptown shouldn't detract from the fact that the crazy things he says really are indicative of broader societal tensions that aren't just a byproduct of crack.

I was not blaming the crack for the crackhead... 😉

He is just parroting. He is not even leading or truly "representing" his constituents. He is being more of an amplifier than a sounding board.

As for the Asian Invasion? I respect, pity, and resent them at the same time. Partially from my own weaknesses, and partially from reality itself.

I respect them for the work and achievement, I pity them for the way they are treated and their ineligibility for "minority" grants and such when they still ARE A MINORITY, and resent them out of my own jealousy for their success.

There are other feelings as well, but I think this gets the general message across....

Imagine somebody was kept in a closet and beaten till the age of 18 and then sent out to open a business. Now suppose you had thousands of folk like that all thrown out at 18 to find a job. And if you gave them the vote I bet they might favor some rather odd people and vote for some strange ideas, especially compared to the thinking of folk raised in families that had been getting up a 4 am for centuries to stay alive.

But I bet that if folk really started to think seriously about broader societal tensions they might not think of themselves as highly of themselves about opposing things like affirmative action or is it, reverse racism, I forget.

Yup, see my previous post in this thread (#20)

Why bother to open a business and work hard while you and your kind can blackmail other businesses to sell (at a huge loss) those businesses to your own choosing.

All I have to say is a BIG FU to those protesters.

Wow... what are we... Zimbabwe?

Anyway... I am patiently awaiting Obama to get on the evening news and said if he had another uncle who used to me mayor of Washington D.C.... he would look like Marion Barry.

Problem is there's no easy way to measure fairness, but there are easy ways to measure results, which means that affirmative action tends to be judged by quotas. And that in turn means that if a minority group as a rule works and studies hard, they are going to get shafted by Affirmative Action because Affirmative Action's core philosophy is that there can be no differences between groups except those imposed by institutional racism.

I can remember the aftermath of Katrina, CNN interviewing two people - a young black man and a 30-something white woman - and also showing a small group of Vietnamese fisherman with voice-over. The young black man's home was destroyed and he was complaining that the bus used for his evacuation wasn't "nice"; he equated it to a slave ship and said "ain't nothin' changed" even while sitting with his arm around his white girlfriend. The 30-something white woman's home was destroyed and she was complaining that FEMA had not showed up with her free trailer. The Vietnamese did not speak on camera (possibly because of language barriers, it's hard to move between tonal and atonal languages) but were sifting through the ruins of their homes, not even recognizable as houses so little were left. Most had tiny piles of salvaged goods. Some had absolutely nothing left to sift and were sweeping the fucking street in front of where their houses used to be. Three devastating shared losses, two very different reactions, and I thought then, "Holy crap, go get me some more of these people and I won't fear for my country." (Although to be fair, you might get similar results with first-generation Jamaicans or Slavs. Our entitlement culture is exclusive of skin color, ethnicity and religion, but not all cultures are equal.)

I believe that immigrants from Africa are the most successful ethnic group in this country if you measure success by educational achievement. Granted that's probably because we get Africa's best & brightest, but it still disproves the notion that the man is holding people down.

This is true; Jessie Jackson tried to get Affirmative Action limited to American-born blacks on the grounds that African-born blacks didn't suffer under slavery and segregation as did American-born blacks. But the left still has some valid points. To be black is to have a lower chance of inheriting a family business, having family members or friends who are professionals or business people or college graduates, have two parents in the home, have excess income for private school or tutors or computers, have legacy status at a college. American-born blacks have the same opportunities as foreign-born blacks or other immigrants, but have the same entitlement mentality as the rest of us native borns. Whereas American-born Asians have on balance a culture of honoring education, hard work and achievement, American-born blacks have on balance less appreciation for these things than other American-born ethnicities.

This is a cultural thing, but it has legitimate underpinnings. Blacks until the mid-sixties were severely discriminated against in much (probably most) of the country, often legally prohibited from the better schools and jobs. That legacy is slow to go away, and there's a natural suspicion that trying to excel in education is wasted effort. Why expend all that effort when the man is just going to hold you down? (As you point out that isn't necessarily the true situation, but it's certainly an understandable belief.) Why try to be the same as your former oppressors when you suspect they'll only see your skin color? American-born blacks have also had a lifetime of being told they are entitled. If I'm entitled, why should I sweat for success? It's your debt, you people sweat for me.

OK OK you got me. I'll stop acting like a conservative and admit he's a Democrat if you'll agree it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter where he's from, what color he is, or what party, he's a piece of shit regardless of any of those things because of what he does says and thinks. Let's just put him in the shit box and not attach any other labels.

Well there is a difference Moonbeam, he self identifies with the group labels. If he didn't I'd back you on this because I don't see what the big deal is, he's just a piece of shit. The problem is he pimps the group identity and tries to guide his groups think. So it does actually matter.

People are free not to patronize stores that are run by people who treat their customers like criminals.

Also, in a lot of really "bad" neighborhoods a significant portion of customers ARE criminals. Acknowledging reality doesn't make a person racist.

People in those areas generally don't have the means to travel far. And the other local stores will likely be the same so there's no reason for them to go elsewhere. To say a significant portion of the customers are criminals is laughable. I live in a bad area and 90% of the people aren't gang members or criminals, they're regular people, the just happen to be lower/poor. While the 10% who are bad do a lot of shit, the 90% shouldn't be treated like dirt because of shit the 10% do.

If the store owners were really that awful then someone who didn't treat his customers like shit would quickly open a competing business and drive the dickheads out of business. Either the store owners aren't that bad or the areas they're located in really are that awful.

They don't have the means to do so, have you been to a store in the ghetto? Here is what you'll see, eyeballing and following around any black or mexican and telling them to hurry up and buy now. You'll also see shit like the same 40 cent Cup of Noodles you get at a regular super market for $2 bucks, sometimes more. I just paid $1.25 for a single stamp at the local store. The stores are that awful but the community doesn't do shit because they just except that's how life in the ghetto is. This is why the bad people in those areas will risk life in prison to rob someone for $20.

If you have the money to open a liquor store in the ghetto you will be rich in no time, along with hard work the prices they charges are how the Koreans do it

First of all, I am sick and tired of all the excuses. Life is not fair, get over it. Knock up bitches and hoes or "keeping it real in da hood" would not solve your own problems.

Secondly, have any of you wonder why the big grocery chains would not or rather would not dare to open stores inside the ghetto areas? Crimes, loitterings, thiefs, and all kind of troubles and problems would not make it worthwhile/beneficial to them.

Thirdly, how would the Asians have the money to open their shops? Do you really think this is how it worked when they went to borrow money? White banker: "No, Shaniqua and Tyrone, we would not loan you any money to open a small shop in your neighborhoood. Go away"......a few days later...White banker: "Oh, welcome to Whitiey Bank, Mr. Chan/Park/Nguyen/fill in the blank Asian names, we have tons of money to loan to you guys, 0% interest and zero collateral". Yup, that must be it. Oh, and those Asians would NEVER pay any taxes, zero, nada, zip. 😀

Fourthly, how could people came to the US (LEGALLY) without any money or a small amount, barely able to speak English, and yet in a few years, have their own businesses, their kids do well in school, able to achieve the American dream. Yet, the people that were born in the US for generations and still live in the ghetto or end up in jail or dead.

There's a reason you'll be a millionaire quicker than in the burbs, risk. Most risky professions do have high margins. Seems if ppl are going to be exposed to being robbed, shot, cussed at they want more money for their efforts and I don't blame them. Koreans should be thought of as heroes rather than gougers - you won't see too many black or white ppl even bother with the ghetto.

But that's kind of the point. You are the one who is identifying (misidentifying)his group identity, even that he has a group identity, and then you want to pass his shitheadedness on to them. His racist attitude toward Asians is not a part of the Democratic platform. He's just a racist asshole who happens to be a Democrat. He belongs to a group of racist assholes who think like him and the title you or they apply to that doesn't matter. A tree is not a horse no matter what you, the horse, or the tree say.

But if you are going to do that then I insist he's a Republican but it doesn't matter. 😉

You have been watching movies like Menace to Society too many times.
Oh and I'm sure you've been in so many of these Korean owned stores in the ghetto to provide such a large sample for your scientific deduction.

"This is why the bad people in the areas will risk life in prison to rob someone for $20"
Your kidding me right? Seriously?

How you compare prices from your local supermarket where margin already on food is next to nothing to the local immigrant corner store in the ghetto is defies logic. The competition in corner stores in the ghetto is also pretty cutthroat. You'll literally have the same type of businesses literally next to each other on the same small block. How much is your cup o noodles at your local corporate owned 7-11?

Not all business owners in the ghetto are rich or will ever be rich. Many lose everything investing in starting up a business. Your speaking about something you know little about as you sound rather ignorant with the stereotypes.
