OH SH!T! Shark Attack

Some Guy just got eaten at my local Surf Spot. He was bodyboarding (thats what I do) when all the sudden he got attacked from behind. I was just about to leave and go there to! They closed the beach until the 1st as well. AHH! I surf every week, sometimes up to 3 times a week. Hella scary. This isnt the first time too. In 1996 some guy got attacked. Now where am I gonna surf big waves? That spot is known for huge waves and real steep drops. Guess im gonna have to wait for the first...

We have seen them at other beaches before. They normaly mean the end of the day.

Yeah, the end of the day, but not the end of the weekend. And who cares if they closed the beach? Has that ever stopped surfers from going out in good waves before? No.

Anyway, if you're really scared of sharks, drive down to SF, looks like there's surf at Ocean Beach.

As for the closure of the beach...
When its closed, its closed. People don't go. Im sure the Rangers would get all up on you if you did. Im willing to bet their is a fine involved. I was actually thinking about ocean beach, but I couldn't find anyone to go down there with me and I didn't feel like making the trip alone. Instead i went to a much smaller spot and surfed there. Its a good spot. Not really big waves, but much smaller crowds. Its also alot more laid back there, you aren't worried about a 15foot monster comming in and wiping you out, or forcing you to paddle further out so you do get raped.

As for the closure of the beach...
When its closed, its closed. People don't go. Im sure the Rangers would get all up on you if you did. Im willing to bet their is a fine involved. Surfers regularly got ticketed by the harbor master for surfing the Santa Cruz Harbormouth until they started dredging it and ruined the sandbar. I've personally been in a group of people that caused the Coast Gaurd to move thier training excercises dwon the beach, after they wanted to use thier boat and thier helicopter right in the best peak on the beach. To even get in the water at Steamer Lane you have to jump over the fence that says "warning: it's illegal to go beyond this fence" and walk down to the end of the cliff. Any beach with a "warning: this beach closed due to contamination/sharks/etc" sign will still be surfed in Santa Cruz if thier waves.

We've never had any problems with closed beaches

They have never closed the beach on us. Even when that dude went in a coma, and when that other guy had to be helicoptored out (as did the shark victim), so I have never had any trouble with it before. So they don't really bother you? Are the tickets expensive? Im poor, couldn't afford 100$ parking ticket. What do they go for? Well it doesn't really matter much anyways, tomorrow is the first. Ill keep that in mind next time they close the beach.

I know a guy who actually spent a night in jail after going out on a closed beach. Turns out in Ocean City, NJ lifeguards actually have legal weight and you can be arrested for ignoring them. Pretty whacky.

It's scary, but OTOH, you're far more likely to bash your head on a reef, and you don't let that stop you. Shark attacks are rare and not usually fatal. It's just one of the risks of the game.

I knew this girl who got mauled by a Great White when she was like 11. It took a large portion of her "hind" with it, as well as a piece of her board. They managed to reconstruct her with plastic surgery and she is normal now. :Q You'd never know if she didn't tell you.
