i here there's something called IPv6... it supports about 3.4×10^38 possible addresses being 128 bit where as IPv4 is 32bit...

windows xp even supports it. built into the core of vista and windows 7. i'm sure linux and mac os x support is as well.

frankly, it's just that the ISP's haven't started giving addresses in IPv6 format but they soon will.

Cause we don't have a networking forum or anything...

Are you just trying to piss in everyone's cherrios this morning?

I think he is posting it here not as a "networking thread" but as another "Oh noes!!!! The interwebs are going to crash in 2012 just like the Mayans predicted!!?!?!??!!111"

I get that, and like Modern Family, it too is not funny.

And for the record, shit. Not piss... shit. And vomit. At 11pm and 4 in the morning. In bed.

Hm.. I wonder if IPv6 will work on all of my stuff. Don't know if my DD-WRT mini router has enough memory to handle it.

We won't be moving to v6 for at least 10 years. There is zero problems with the v4 address space. You have no idea the major overhaul it would take for providers and v6. We're not doing it because we don't need too.

This whole "we're going to run out of address space!!!1one!!" sounds like 1997 all over again. It's simply not a problem thanks to network address translation and dns fixups.

Yeah, always a ton of back and forth on this. There's some push in the industry to get people up to speed on ipv6, and while i've heard ARIN is really locking down on what they'll hand out (even though I still had 0 issues getting a new /18 last week) I can't really see anyone fulling moving to v6 in 2 years time.

I, for one, plan to hang out with John Cuzak and his family at the beginning of 2012. We'll drive a Limo to the airport, steal a plane, and eventually make it to the Himalayas, where we will board arks that will transport us to the new internet.

There are still a lot of Class A's owned by organizations that barely use any of them. I'm sure they'll extend IPv4 by reclaiming some of those.

First, what Spidey said.

Second, it doesn't even matter if windows/max/linux supports IPV6. NAT is capable of doing IPV6>IPV4 translations. It's not an elegant solution, but it can be done.
