OH NO I spilled soda on my friends lap top

Hey i spilled some siera mist on my friends lap top. its worth about 500 bucks. it was wqorking at the moment i spilled the soda, but now it doesnt work

HELP!

Indeed.

You should have turned it off immediately.

Now you must unplug all power, remove the battery, and let it air dry for a day or two. You might also want to open up the laptop and wipe up any big spots of moisture with a cotton ball and maybe some isopropyl alcohol (91%).

If it doesn't work after being completely dried, you're out of luck.

Was it on when you spilled it? If it wasn't on at the time, turning it on to check its vitals would have been a very bad idea. My watercooling once dripped all over my video card, but because it wasn't on at the time and I didn't turn it on until after two days to let it completely dry, it was fine in the end.

u should get a professional cleaner to work on it. sugary drinks are going to screw things up if not removed.

we wiped up the big spots, it was on when we spilled, it stayed on for a half an hour he closed it, and it hasnt been on since. Where would one get such a cleaner in MD?

ok, take the lappy apart, get a toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol along with some napkins. clean the entire thing, even places that don't look like they have soda. before you do ANYTHING ELSE, unplug it and remove the battery

letting it air dry is a bad idea because only the water from the soda will evaporate, leaving all the sugars, acids, and whatever else is in soda to sit on the board and corrode contacts. bugs will also go to dried soda (ants and crap)

Nail polish remover will remove some things probably, but not the white corrosion from circuits shorting that you will see when you open it up. At least not well.

use alcohol to throughly dry that thing.


Isn't Acetone ( nail polish remover ) too strong for the PCB and circuits ?

No just use some rubbing alcohal. I would not try Nail polish remover. I think it is too strong for the PCB and the circuit as isekii said.

make it so it looks clean and try to trick him and print out a picture resembling his desktop and tape it on the screen

Acetone is not too strong for circuitry. It IS way too strong for plastics, however (melts). So getting it on your CPU socket would probably be really bad. But be safe and just use alcohol here.

This is like the time you came over, and killed all my goldfish, and flushed them down the toilet. Then you told me I never had any goldfish at all.

But why did I have the bowl...why did I have the bowl??





Sorry, anyhow if you've done all the steps outlined above and it's been several days you MAY be out of luck. Sometimes, oddly enough after you've exausted alll of your options, it will work again if you give it a few days. Then again, mostly not.

In order to get rid of soda, you first have to clean thoroughly with warm distilled water (you can get a gallon at WalMart, etc.for under $1.) as sugars and other components of soda don't dissolve well in alcohol. I would completely disassemble the laptop prior to cleaning including removing the CPU and any socketed memory and/or ICs. Followed (do not allow the water to dry at all before rinsing with alcohol as that would just allow any remaining solutes to redeposit on surfaces) by a rinse with 90% (or higher) isopropyl alcohol - can be gotten at most drug stores. Drain as much alcohol as possible and then blow dry with the dryer on medium heat.
. In any case, leaving it on after the spill (and turning it back on before it was thoroughly cleaned) was a very lame-brained thing to do (not to mention bringing drinks within spilling distance of a computer in the first place)... :roll:

ugh thats evil. diet around computers is better.. if only for cleanup issues. i'd say its dead. let dry and try to use, but u've fux0red it even if it does work... u owe him a new laptop.. and yes clean with 99% rubbin alcohol. its now ur messed up laptop, and u might have a chance of having something more then a paper weight to hold down the bill of the laptop u owe him.

Good advice. You might want to use canned "air" prior to using warm air to dry everything. Wear eye protection.
