OH NO, I BROKE my friends guitar!!!

My roomate has a fender acoustic guitar and told me I could practice on it whenever I want (I'm just starting to learn). So anyway, he went home this weekend and I had a bunch of people over last night. Before I knew it, someone had knocked the guitar off the bed onto the floor and it wasn't till today that I noticed a nick on the edge of the neck between the 2nd and 3rd frets on the E string. As if I didn't feel bad enough right then, I ended up snapping one of his strings b/c I thought I'd be nice by at least tuning the thing since it was horribly out of tune. Now I don't know what to do or say! I'm going to buy him a new set of strings, I guess that's the least I can do, but should I be held responsible for the neck damage? Luckily, this is a relatively cheap guitar (I believe under $200), and he always mentioned how he really needed to replace the strings and how he hasn't gotten new strings since he's had the guitar. So now I'm looking for strings, but I don't know what to buy since there's about a million different choices out there? Any recommendations as to what particular kind of strings I should look for?

Why don't you buy some strings and wait 'till your roommate comes back before showing or telling him about the neck damage. Take responsibility for it, since it was your friends who damaged it. Who knows, he might just say, "Oh, don't worry about it."

Either way though, I personally feel that it's your responsibility to get strings and fix/replace the neck. But if your roommate says it's fine, then that's great.

BTW, you're a good roommate...all my friends' roommates would have said, "Huh? Oh I guess the guitar fell, it's not my problem." :disgust:

yeah, strings aren't that expensive......$10 a set tops(for a cheap set) just explain things, take responsibility.....and if it IS a cheap guitar, don't worry about the nick.....i wouldn't.......now if it were a taylor....AHHHHHHH best to just throw yourself out the window now....that'd be $3k!!!(to replace the whole thing)

I agree.. a nick on the neck is not going to impact the sound quality of a $200 guitar...

BUT... you are an a-hole for ot properly taking care of a loaned item so you've got that to atone for. Take it to a music shop and have it cleaned and the strings replaced.
Then say 5 our fathers and your penance will be done.

I don't see a big problem here.

If it was my guitar i'd be ok with it as long as you got me a new set of strings.
I love the feel of fresh new strings on my guitar.
