friend brought computer to me after damaging the motherboard by pulling a stick of memory out with the power cord still plugged into the power supply.

He took it to a "tech" who had him replace the hard drive and memory( killed a memory slot) the tech reloaded xp and the pc was then brought to me for a look over.

I loaded some antivirus stuff, adobe reader, open office, spybot etc.

I checked the hardware listing and saw that the sm bus had the yellow question mark and so I thought I needed to check to be sure that the motherboard drivers were all loaded.

Went to the chaintech site and the chipset drivers were unavailable so I figured I go to the nvidia site and get the latest unified driver. downloaded the drivers.

started install and unchecked the video and lan drivers which I had already inspected.

Installed, rebooted, saw the windows screen with the traveling blue bar, screen went blank or black, hard drive led was on and then nothing with the hd light still on... it stuck.

rebooted by the reset button .... given safe mode options...chose safe mode.. screen scrolls as drivers are loaded then stops after/ during drivers\Mup.sys and will go no further.

Any Ideas if I can save this install? If so how do I go about it?

Not sure how... is a windows "repair" an option?
If you have to reinstall windows it doesn't seem like you've lost that much.

jazz is jazz, and i love it. good luck,
mike

thanks uncle bob that worked.
I'm still curious... how do I tell if the chipset drivers have been loaded or would they have been included in xp and don't need to be loaded.
the questionmark is back beside the sm bus icon in the hardware list.
Any ideas?

Yes but ATX boards are hot unless the PS is turned off with it's switch or unplugged, so it's not a good idea to pull cards out unless you unplug or turn off the PS itself.
