Oh my! Civ 4 is terribly addictive..

Ah, it's ok. I bought it because of the hype, and have played about 20 games though. It's good and a deffinate time waster, but it is not the best game out there.

FYI, for quick money and techs, declare war on the civ. After 10 turns, ask them to make peace, but to hand over a tribute of gold and techs. They will reject if you click on "will you accept this deal", so click on "what would make this deal work." They will offer you the same exact deal and you can accept it. Makes catching up to the comp in techs so much easier. They'll give you anything except cities.

There are a couple of other known exploits you can find on the civfanatics forums. Should be fixed in the next patch.
