To all you favoring space exploration, here's one for you.

They'll change the story in a couple of days. We've had to many "they found it, oops, no we didn't" stories lately.

Bah - I'd rather spend my money on furthering scientific knowledge/understanding than a large amount of BS we already spend it on.

the government will make note of what to do with your 0.0000000000000000000002 %.

"How come we missed this when they were looking for water on mars many years before the mars express?

Its a massive light blue spot on a dark coloured planet!"

my issue is why not spend it on stuff that really matters? health care, poverty, etc...

it's either fighting for oil or looking for water on mars, knowing damn well we can live there anyways. what next? let's go see if we can reach the sun?

You want to be the first astronaut to the sun go right ahead.

Nope but I'm sure they'll send something there to see how much longer the sun has to live, and you'll probably be the first to piss and moan about how your tax dollars are being wasted. "I told you so"

It's not that massive, so it would be a little difficult to find quickly.

Anyway, I think this is a great photo, but I've known for years that there is frozen water on Mars, so has much of the scientific community.

Regardless of what is said about the usefulness of traveling to Mars ATM, we will need to eventually. I want to live long enough to see our first terraformed planet, but that is dependent on the possibility of us becoming a "type 1 civilization" before I keel-over. 😛

Yes lets just stop funding everything but health care, education, and poverty.

Its my tax money! Screw Space! Screw science!

Er, it's a crater... meaning a comet crashed, and the water probably came from the comet.

But yes, there's "native" water at the poles anyway.

yeah, except for the part where social welfare programs are HUGE money sinks for the govt. NASA gets a few billion ($15 i think) vs the *HUNDREDS* of billion spent on social welfare (medicare/medicaid, social security, etc.)

want real progress to be made on the scientific front, that could revolutionize the world? yeah, you may want to invest in scientific endeavors put forth by NASA, national labs, NIH, and other government sponsored agencies.
