Ok well i got my new 6800 today and i put my vga silencer on it with arctic ceramique...

Everything seemed fine my temps were really good, but i started up WoW and i noticed some textures were kinda flickering which was sorta weird.

I got up and came back a minute later, and my screen was full of artifacts and i had to shut off. When i booted back up my bios screen had artifacts like crazy. I could barely read any text. So i unplugged my monitor cord and switched the power plug to the vid card and the artifacts went away. I played some more wow and i noticed the texture flicker was still there. I again left and came back and the screen was just black. I restarted and the artifacts at the bios screen was just insane colors and letters everywhere... when i got to the log in screen it just went black. I went back and reapplied the ceramique and now everything seems fine. I'm really worried now that it'll happen again at any second... sad
 
I think he was reffering to the temps of ur card not your case or CPU which is the temp. I assume ur stating

i reseated 3 times and tried different drivers.

i have a pretty good psu ( tagan 480 )

the texture flicker is gone now so thats a very good sign.

Could this have been caused by a bad softmod? I softmodded, but after the last reseat and reapplication of the ceramique it started up fine... so i'm a little hesitant to check if it was the softmod.

and this is a regular 6800 not a gt.

My vga silencer works really well i guess. Shaved off 10 degrees on idle and 25 degrees on my load 😀

Yeah that could be a problem.
 
Ive also heard of the same sort of thing happening because of a softmod that the card couldnt handle.
That is probably what your problem is.
 
i tested it and it was the pp but my pv modded ok... but i doubt it makes any difference anyway.

bfg would get a little suspicious since this i just got this rma on friday lol..

Yup, it's the NV 5. I just bought one at Jab-tech.com to go with a 6800 I'm ordering soon.

I hope it works as well as I've read.

Back on topic: You might check to see that everything is full seated. The Arctic Cooling web site notes that Asus hasn't followed Nvidia's standard layout for the 6800 series so it has some minor issues and requires some modification of the shroud. Maybe your BFG board has a similar issue? Also, it might be possible that the cooler is shorting something that is a little too tall, but that would probably mean the board wouldn't work at all.
 
its probably the pp

i enabled 16pp 6vp and i got texture flicker in wow

then i disabled the 4pp and the flicker went away so i 'm just assuming that it was the softmod.
 
Oh no....

I'm tottaly unsoftmodded now... but when i play WoW for just a couple minutes i get screen of artifacts and a lockup... 🙁
 
I checked the temp during the lock ups and they were never above 50 degrees.

I reseated the heatsink again and i got the bios screen full of artifacts again.... very unsettling

I did another re apply on some of the ram that didn't look like it had enough ceramique and i still got the screen of artifacts.

But then i switched the power plug with another one and it worked just fine. weird...
 
yeah, artifacts are generally attributed to a flaky power supply..

the Tagan isn't a proven brand, and is probably the cause of your problems..
 
i think my tagan 480 is really good. the rails are rock solid...

I think some of the memory on the card didn't have enough ceramique.
