do you get thrown off when you're placing a call expecting to talk directly with someone, but get their voicemail instead? Or vice-versa? I have a really hard time with this. I usually know what I'm going to say before I place the call, but then when I get "Hi please leave a message blah blah" I'm just completely thrown off, almost speechless. "Oh..uh..." Is it just me? :\

Nah, I make calls expecting them to go to voicemail. I get surprised when someone picks up.

I make calls expecting an answer or voicemail, in which case I do the obvious and leave a message. I don't see what's so hard about it.

I get surprised when I don't hit an IVR. I was very surprised when I called my credit union for the first time with an inquiry (was not switched to them yet) and a person actually started talking to me! IVRs are great tech and all but they're way overdone now.

As for voice mail, I hate talking to a machine, mostly because I don't know when the person will actually get the message. I usually keep my message short and sweet "Hey, just to let you know XYZ is down, give me a call back whether or not you can go check it out". Which is a typical voice mail if I'm calling someone on a trouble at work.

Back in high school when I was in driver's ed, I ended up calling our teacher who is my best friend's dad. I had to leave him a message saying I wasn't going to make our lesson that day due to some reason, I've forgotten now.

Anyway, I left a message basically saying I wasn't going to make it then hung up. About 3 seconds after hanging up I realized I forgot to say who was calling so I called back and left another message saying who it was leaving the previous message.

My best friend and his dad got a good laugh out of it and saved the recording. I felt like a total retard.

It doesn't throw me off, but what annoys me is when their voice mail goes something like "Hello.............................................................................This is John and I can't answer the phone right now so leave me a message."

When I get voicemails like that I begin to leave my very important reply, but half way through I hit the end button so they only get half of it. That shit was funny the first time it happened to me, I am since tired of it.

I'll be damned if I can find the damn thing but there is a website that I have used before that gives you a number that, when used in conjunction with a real number you want, forces all calls to voicemail. It is perfect if you do not want to talk to the other person but it doesn't work with a lot of numbers unfortunately.

Ah, it's called slydial, apparently there are other apps that work better, though:

BTW while on topic I will actually stab you if you leave me a voicemail that is long and then you rattle off your call back number quickly at the end, thus requiring me to listen to 60 seconds of you rambling to get the number again. IMO voicemail etiquette 101 requires you to open the message with your number and then number again at the very end. People will appreciate it.
