Corrected for those unfamiliar with n0cmonkey's terminology.

It's not my terminology. How free can it be if someone is dictating its uses to you?

It is your terminology because by any other definition it is free. They do not dictate it's use to you. It's a god damned browser, you browse the web with it. This isn't rocket science. How long are you going to hold onto this feeble attempt to say the browser isn't free when it is, everyone who uses it, develops it, and reviews it says it is... except you.

I have used most of them and Opera is an excellent browser, those that say otherwise don't know what they talking about, and what I have seen from this thread is a lot of Firefox users(why am I not surprised).

Firefox is not perfect ,infact no browser is,just remember there are a few good browsers around.

All of the features that people laud Firefox for (tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, integrated searching, integrated popup blocker) Were all innovated by Opera.

I have FF installed but I almost never use it. To me it feels like a dumbed down version of Opera.

And one can argue that Opera uses a 'dumbed down' mailing system and a dumbed down newsreader system.....compared to stand alone products.

Out of curiosity, could you expound on that preference?

Not challenging it - just attempting to understand it.

i had more time to browse with opera and i just...well as said...love it :)

Sites FINALLY look they are supposed to and not every other site fonts and texts screwed up etc....and its fast and HIGHLY configurable.

If you argue "GUI"...ehrm...first of..its a webbrowser and (to be honest)....there is not much to do where you need a gui (at least not for me)...i have my standard bars and i personally dont need all the additional stuff like panels etc...

Also..it is true that it looks like FF stole most features actually from Opera...as said i didnt see anything which i thought i am missing with Opera since everything i need is already there.

Form a certain point of view i COULD say it doesnt matter whether you use FF or O (ok, the latter COSTS something which is definatly a point :) ....but then overall the fact that i have problems on quite a bit pages with FF and NOT with Opera make it definitly better than FF.

I am surfing sites now and it is like a new experience finally having all the texts/fonts etc. right...and some websites/links didnt work AT ALL with FireFox.

This is also meant as CONSTRUCTIVE criticism towards firefox !!!

Observe, i do not like any clutter at all. With firefox, i can isolate everything i need on one line and i also do not have a banner ad like with opera 8.

Agreed.

Although i likely would just use Avant Browser if Firefox didn't exist.

I've been using Opera quite frequently lately... does anybody know how to get the dictionary function to open in another page? It's annoying to have it open in the same page.

Everything you described can be done with Opera.

Isn't this only for Opera 7.xx anyway?

My Opera 7.xx key works in 8. For some reason.

Because it's a web browser, not Outlook, Eudora, or otherwise. The Newsreader, IRC client, and mail client are just extra features. They probably weren't intended to replace your commercial products :p

Yeah, Opera isn't free, and is slow compared to Firefox (trust me, i can tell, i have dial up, and i know the difference after many weeks of testing). It feels so bloated, BUT i do admit I felt "safer" using it...still, FF does a great job, so i'll stick with it.

Are you sure you're talking about Opera? You're the first person i've ever heard describe Opera as slow and bloated. It takes FF maybe 5-8 secs to load for me, whereas Opera takes 1-2.

I haven't used dialup in about 7 years now, so i can't tell you whether it's slower or faster... but on broadband, Opera is MUCH faster than FF, even with the FF tweaks.

No, not like that, you have two bars there... One has File, Edit, etc. and a seperate line/bar has the rest of the things, like the address bar.

also, do tell how you can get opera 8 without the banner for free

Yeah, that'd be nice, except I actually use my tabs and run at 1600x1200(x2). So screen real estate isn't a major issue for me. :p

The tool bar like that takes exactly 1.5 inches. Your method takes about a quarter of an inch.

If a picture is too big I can always zoom out. That, and there is always F11 ;)

Opera is free and is the fastest browser on the internet. Benchmarks have shown this, and last I heard Opera 8 has built-in web accelerator.

i tried opera, but i couldn't find a way to make a "Links" bar like what you find in firefox/IE. i mean i could drag URLs to the toolbar but it's nearly as flexible as ff/ie's method. eg i can't find a way to link a toolbar directly to a bookmarks folder so that i can drag URLs unto the toolbar or directly into folders on the toolbar.

it might not seem like a big deal but over the years i've developed a browsing habit that relies heavily on that bookmarks bar where i keep frequently visited sites or temporary items of interests. it's much more convenient for me than a menu or a sidebar.

better, i run at 1600x1200 also, but i like every inch of screen space. I am glad firefox can do for free what opera provides with a fee to remove to banner:)

but no matter, we could go at this all night long. I could not convince you to join firefox fanboys and you could not convince me to join the opera squad. so lets just leave it at that, heh.
