Hello,

I recently Bougt a Hedgehog 238M and a tbird 1000 I removed my old super Orb that is broken and slped the hedgehog right on. After gettng some really hight temps I thought i put too much thermal Paste. so i attepted to take it back off. after fighting the thing I finally got it off. but heard a loud SNAP! just before i got it off. o checked the hooks on the socket they were ok. I look at the CPU's core and screamed. I took off some themal pasted put the HSF back on and prayed. It turned on and went into windows. ?!?!? I was very puzzeled. the temps were fine. but Parts of the core was.. broken!!!! (It was really just a little busted on the top where it sayes AMD ATHLON. it had a bit of metal showing also and little particals also showing which would not blow off with compressed air.

Everything is running just fine and it stable as ever. what the hell did i break then?

Whoa!

I chipped my core a tiny bit on my 800 Tbird and it doesn't work at all... I would never take that heatsink off again if i were you, it will probably not be so forgiving next time...

Hello,

I have a question, Should I try to Get an Exchange While the CPU still works? Im can Probally say Its acting funny and Its not the Mobo cuz I tried it with a duron and it worked fine.

Im thinking about it because im worried about a premature death.

Pray it keeps working. Don't ever remove the heatsink/fan again to "just see how that crack is doing". i doubt you'll see any replacement for that, and if you have to try to use it after you get turned down for a replacement, it might not work.:(

Still sucks though.

Hmmm.. got to wonder.. exactly at which point is too much core damage, and is there any way a core can be repaired?

Mine is just rounded around the edges, but it won't post... makes you wonder...

Damn, I skipped your first sentance and later said "Damn, i'd hate to do that to my Duron600, wonder what this guy's got...HOLY SH!!!T a 1 Ghz!" ouch, well i guess they do go for peanuts these days.

[Crochety Old Man] Back in my day, we gave an arm and a leg for a Pentium 166!! And we liked it too! I mustuv lost a Gigahertz worth of limbs in The War. You kids today... *muffled shouts of resistance* [/Crochety Old Man]

Sorry, I promise to never do that again.

Anyways, send that in to [H]ardOCP, they seem to get a kick outof broken-but-working Socket A stuff. Oh yeah, that would require re-removal.

NO! do not try to get a replacement. it may run fine even though the core is cracked, but no retailer will take back a broken CPU (running or not). The only way a core can crack is by the user (unless it was damaged during shipping). the way retailers see it is, "we wont take it back for full refund or exchange if we cant put it back on the shelf," and you certainly cannot put a CPU with a cracked core back on the shelf, no matter how well it runs after being cracked. it seems to me your only option is to use it until it dies. after all, it isnt everday that one can say they cracked their core and it still runs fine. dont remove the heatsink again until the CPU dies. ;)

How do U guys crack the core ??
I first had a chrome orb, then a modded alpha, then chrome orb again, then alpha with 2 fans, then cyes chrome orb again, then Taisol and finally the FOP38 - looks like I can keep going forever..... Too much energy is bad for AMD.

Yep, I think I've cracked my Duron's core when I put new cooler on it. I read in some newsgroup someone had same kind of symptoms. Everything works fine, but Microsoft programs and Netscape 6 show jpegs and mpegs blurred. NS4.76, ACDSee and PSP7 shows jpegs correctly.
I wonder how in the hell is that possible?

I also managed to crack the core of my 1GHz Tbird while removing the Super Orb for the first time. I really can't understand how someone can make a cooler that is supposed to be removed with the help of a screwdriver, it's what I always knew one shouldn't do... The core of my CPU is damaged in the bottom end, but the processor seams to be working OK for now. I am really not pleased with that aspect of AMD processors, I've applied twice as much pressure on a P3 and nothing happend. I wonder for how long it will work? Looks like I'm not the only one around with that problem.

Well hell, I'm glad I'm in good company. I just built me a tbird 1000ghz and MSI k7tpro2a system.

I let it burn in for two days, rock solid. I thought now I'll overclock it and change my orb for a SUPERorb. While putting on superorb I was extremely careful, well I heard a little CRUNCH. I lifted heatsink and the edge of the amd proccesor sticking up was powdered. I was thrilled so I yelled and cussed at the cat for being nearby !!!!.

Now it boots up and runs, however I'm getting some sh!tty scores in Quake3 and Final Reality won't complete. Twice tonight it's booted up as an Athlon 600?????? Wierd.

Well now I have an excuse to get that TBird 1200.

The orbs sure look nice but are a horriable to get on and off.

TBIRD 1000GHZ
MSI K7T-Pro2a
256 megs Corsiar 133mhz Cas2 Ram
Creative Geforce 2 GTS
IBM 45gb ATA100 7200rpm Harddrive
SoundBlaster Live
Intel Pro100+ NIC
3COM Hardware Modem
Enlight Case w/300watt supply
19 Inch CTX Monitor

I'm scared :( I am thinking of building a T-Bird system soon, and will probably change HSF at least two times. But for the most part reading this, it seems that just the SUPERorb was breaking everything. So think I will fine if I DON'T use a SUPERorb? How hard is a FOP32-1 to mount? I'm usually careful, but you can never be _too_ careful......

Cracked core.

Still running fine.

Next thing I know you probably tell us you OCd it to 1.5 Gig, running smoothly...

Bullshit. Get real, do you guys even know what the core looks like??

Yepp clever guy,

could also send you a picture of a cracked 1GHz Tbird in case you haven't seen one. Although I won't bother removing the damn cooler again if not really required. To all planing to use Super Orb, it's a great cooler, a little noisy though, compared to the Orbs and stuff, but in line with other heavy weight coolers. Does a perfect job in cooling but, please use a screwdriver when removing it otherwise you will most likely crack you CPU core.;)

Is it just me or does it seem like more cracked cores come from putting on/removing Orbs than any other HS/F combo?

Easy, Deathwish!

Don't get one of those stupid (and highly overrated)ORBs!

Go with the forged Taisol (3 clips - easy snap-on, no tools needed!) for example...

hmmm.. It seems like the 1ghz core is tougher than the other cores. Three 1 ghz core chiped and cracked and still works? Maybe AMD designed their newer chips with core that still work with crack core?

Nahh, maybe you three are lucky. haha
