"Paper launch", anyone?

I have to say I'd be fairly disappointed in AMD if this is true and it ends up being like the 2400+ and 2600+ launches.

Regarding paper launches: is it just me, or is AMD worrying waaaay too much about having numbers that match Intel's numbers? Will Compaq/HP stop making AthlonXP-based business PC's if AMD doesn't have a 2800+ when Intel has a 2.8GHz out? I wouldn't think it matters so darn much that paper launches are necessary. Maybe they just need to keep the shareholders happy?

I think they're going to OEM's first and then the DIY market later. It makes more sense economically and for marketting.

The only good thing about paperlaunches is that we get to know the performance of the chip long before it's availible. This is especially important if it contains new features such as 333FSB or 512KB L2. In this case it will be interesting to see what boost the 333FSB gives, combined with the Nforce2 chipset.

I mean, how many people would complain if AMD paperlaunched Clawhammer tomorrow, with all sites posting benchmarks of the thing running at 2.2GHz or something? Of course they wouldn't do such a thing but it sure would be fun if they did. We've all been craving for benchmarks of that thing 🙂

Well, if they aren't beating at least the P4 2.66GHz, if not the 2.8GHz, by a sizable margin in most apps(and I'm guessing it won't), then I'm finally gonna make the switch back to intel. My last 2 systems for the house have been AMD Athlons, and while they still rule the price/performance category, my next system will be all out performance, and that's where AMD falls flat.

I know! And I heard the 2400+/2600+ were being launched in the middle of sept, where are they? And now with another hammer delay, I guess AMD is back to what they do best, delay and paper launch

I don't care all too much right now, I won't be building anything new until Barton and Prescott are out and I get to see where AMD and Intel are at at that time. Yes, right now Intel is beating AMD pretty badly, but AMD has had the better product for a few years before so why can't they do it again? I don't see any reason for me to upgrade before AGP 8x is in full use and SATA is out and running everywhere for a good price. I'm 17 and don't have all too much money so I don't want to go get a 2.8ghz P4 right now just to upgrade 1st quarter 2003, there's no point.

They are forced to do this because the shareholders, like some people on this board, think if you don't have the fastest chip then you suck. Just look at some of the posts around here to get a feeling for that mentality. I've seen many flame wars with an Intel fanboy talking about how they have a better computer because they have a P4 in it. Never mind that their P4 is slower than their "enemy's" Athlon. The whole problem is people look at the top of the market when they look at which chip is "better" but then they buy in the middle of the market. I doubt the shareholders are any smarter.

On pricewatch the 2400 and 2600+ are ETA'd as 10/1/02...So I smell paper launch as well...

Hey and if they (meaning the 2400/2600+) are going to the oems first then where the fvck are they by now...Good lord!!! Cant those incompetent bastages (oems) figure out how to install one in a board yet!!!😉

Anymore rumors on the 3.06ghz p4 release or will amd try to hit 3ghz first with a paper launch???

I pretty much call BS....

1) pricewatch has listed 2600+ since its paper launch the 3rd week in august with etas for 10/1 and still to this date the chips is 300+ dollars oem chip, ETA'd 10/1/02, and only 5 retailers listed....

2) Not a hint of 2700 or 2800+ xps in my search for preorders or ETA's....

I don't see it happening...

I see maybe review releases next week but same old 1 month plus later BS...

Smart business model by AMd....undercut your current flagship processor before you ever really start selling them. You know th price will have to drop to try to make the 2800+ at 300 dollar entry level so 2600+ drops to 200 and 2400+ is likely 160-180 range...Can you figure why they are loosing money???

Duvie, they would have had to cut the price on the XP2200 regardless whether they had paperlaunched the XP2400 and XP2600 or not. Simply because Intel is cutting their prices in that range and AMD has to follow suit.

I think the real reason why AMD paperlaunched these CPUs was because Intel was going to release the 2.8GHz. And AMD didn't want it to appear that they had lost the performance race completely. I mean imagine if all the review sites had compared P4 2.8GHz vs XP2200.. Not good for AMD so they 'launched' the XP2600 and made sure that samples were sent to the major reviewers. At least then it would make an appearance that AMD is keeping up, if only just.. The downside to this is that AMD gets the reputation of paperlaunches, but apparently they felt that a few review samples that are compared with the P4 2.8GHz was worth it. I can't say I agree. But at least we got to see the performance of the XP2600 a month ahead of it's release, something we rarely get to do 🙂

Bud, got any more links??? I say that because many other oem dealers list eta's of 10/1....I wonder if you customize any system to 2600+ xp and go to checkout and process if you get a notice saying it is a preorder....I mean it is only less then a week away now so with standard processing time going into a weekend that would be acceptable dealy and they may ave actually not had them yet.

I haven't seen one person brag about a 2600+ system here and a couple other sites...If oems were actually selling them one of theose "gotta always have the fastest first" guys would have bought one......

I definitely don't see the 2700-2800+ even being sold by oems come 10/1.....

Duvie,
You are correct they don't have the cpu yet, but at least they are starting to list them on the sites. I just got off the phone with them and they will start shipping them in one week. It will probably be another month before 2700/2800+ are out, oh well I have another 6 months before I start thinking of my next computer purchase 🙂

I think the launch of the XP2700/2800+ is intended to gain mindshare, not marketing position or revenue- at least initially.
It's almost certain to be awhile before it hits the DIY market in OEM, considerably longer for PIB shipments to begin. In all likelyhood it'll be limited availability to select OEM partners only.

What it will do is allow them to do is say they've matched Intel's best, and have a full range of products from the cheapest mobile processors, on up to low end servers- and can compete on a price and performance basis.
They'll show they can produce an AthlonXP competitive against Intel's fastest.
I look at it as being strictly a bragging rights only processor for AMD, intended purely to boost consumer confidence and enthusiast market opinion of AMD.

The only disadvantage is some potentially negative publicity from launching without availability-but they've already done that with the AXP2600+, so I'm doubting that will be enough to out-do the positive publicity they will recieve.
