Oh great, opened up my dad's computer to figure out why the USB ports weren't working.......

It makes me wonder how anybody can sell a reliable motherboard for under $100, if they need to spend $30 on just the capacitors for them to be good enough. :)

I'd RMA the board or just play it safe and buy a new one before I'd spend $30 to try and fix it myself.

Because we buy 10 or less at a time. The manufacturers buy 10 or more cases of full reels of parts at a time. :)

Actually, that was sarcasm. I was pointing out that you're wrong. Parts Express has capacitors for $0.50 which are rated just as high as the ones on that site you listed. They're both obviously much better than the original caps that came on your board.

But feel free to pay $30 instead of $3.

No, it's not sarcasm. You see, my long posts actually had something to say. This is much different than, say, Cerb's post, or many of the posts on the first couple pages which have quadruple-nested quotes.

Not everybody views this page in 1600x1200 fullscreen. I do my browsing on a 768x1024 portrait display, which is the perfect size for 99% of web pages, but in this case I have to scroll through two pages just to see Cerb's 8-word post, because he just randomly hit the quote button and left all the nonsense in... Not to mention the brilliant political signature.

Injecting politics into every comment on a hardware forum is another thing I love to see.
(now that was sarcasm)

Dude, just tell your dad the situation and let him decide. Since the MB still works tell your dad he has a choice to keep the MB with the risk that it will break and take other system components with it, or tell him to pony up $50 and you'll happily yake care of putting a new MB in for him. It's NOT YOUR PROBLEM. It's *his* problem. Just lay it out for him as straightforward as you can and that's all you have to do.

This is the perfect time for a situation that I have to.
I have the EpoX 8K3A+, and as one of the mobos on the lists, it does have the faulty caps I guess.
What does it take to replace these caps? you just pull on them? or does it take some intense soldering.

You can pull on them - but then the metal leads that go all the way into the cylinders will remain in the motherboard, and there'll be liquid electrolyte all over the place. Not a good idea. :)
So yes, soldering is needed. Probably with a high-wattage soldering pencil - I needed 40W to effectively melt the solder on a motherboard.

Another question - is there a list anywhere of the manufacturers who've been found to be making bad capacitors? GSC is one, but I've not seen any companies named anywhere on the websites that detail this whole corporate espionage thing. Why is this?

I had the problem on an MSI K7N420. I visually saw the capacitors starting to bulge before they started to leak more. I replaced 4 around the supply for the CPU and one around the top PCI slot. Wasn't too hard to do.

Anyone else think its crazy that the manufacturer's aren't doing anything about this, even though its a known fact that the capacitors have proven to be defective?

i dont know if the manufacturers are using bad batches anymore or if bad capacitors are still being produced. I'd like to know if this problem is affecting current generation boards. Even if manufacturers are still using bad capacitors, it would be difficult for them to know theyre faulty until after they've used them on millions of boards.

If you're an individual, you're expected to pay for crimes.
If you're a corporation, do your best to cover your tracks so that there's no one to really hold responsible. But if anyone does really press the CEO needs only say "I accept full responsibility" and then hope that everyone forgets about it.

AFAIK, many are. I've heard of quite a few guys here being able to RMA mobos well out of warranty with all bad caps.

Thing is, some companies are just greedy, and hey, it's out of warranty...

I want to, but I just can't sympathize with a guy that drives a Miata. ESPECIALLY one that supercharged his Miata. I would honestly rather drive my last car - '88 LeBaron - than a Miata. But that's just my opinion.

If Newegg doesn't RMA it, check with the manufacturer.
