i grew up in south florida. my parents and sister (who is still in high school) live there. i remember hurricane gloria and was fortunate enough to be at summer camp in the catskills when andrew hit in '92. my whole family was at home but there was no major damage that occurred to our house; just a bunch of fallen trees in our backyard and surrounding areas. hurricanes still are frightening, and i know my mother freaks out every time there's a possibility of a storm.

my aunt and uncle live in new jersey. when floyd hit, their basement was flooded and they had to replace the entire thing. it's too bad -- my aunt is a physical therapist and works out of her home down there, so it affected business as well as their living situation.

i live in so. fla. and im not too worried. we live in an apartment so its not like any major damage is going to be taking money from our pockets.

and also we only lost power once for a few hours last season. rains the only thing the sucks, becuase it literally rains every day, but other than that not too bad

I'll be in Europe "safe" for the next five months.

The trip back in October may be interesting providing I don't transfer beforehand.

I enjoy higher seas. Once they're over 25 feet or the possibility of a rogue wave increases it isn't so fun. Getting kicked out of bed or having the TV or lappy get hurled at you while sleeping is not so fun. (We are advised of these potentially prevailing conditions before retiring to our bunks so that loose items can be secured but that doesn't always happen!)

On shore, encounters with 'canes is always interesting providing you don't have to leave in the middle of the event to seek higher ground because of flooding. That really sucks.

I got hit with parts of all the big 4 last year....

Hurricane Charley, the one that slammed into the sw coast of FL... The eye passed within about 15 miles from my apt at the time.... Amazingly, we missed the big portion of the damage...

Your lucky. I can't believe its taking so long for the cleanup. Pretty scary. Makes you wonder what would happen if someone got hit by two major hurricanes back to back.

Speaking of Charley...

These guys were VERY lucky.

Experienced storm chasers too. (Jim Reed) This one came up VERY fast, pressures dropped into the 940's in MINUTES. If they were closer to the coast they would have died.

That's about as real as the footage gets! I have some footage from Mark Suddeth and his team intercepting Charley and taking cover in SUV's from beneath an underpass as winds gust to over 125 mph on their anemometer. They climb out with the camera rolling when they eye is over and the winds are calm and the damage is tremendous! Light poles designed to withstand 125 mph winds snapped over, etc. It's about 21 MB if anyone wants I can arrange to have it hosted.

I think I already saw that one as well! It was cool though! I would love to be out there! I don't care if I died.
