Symptoms

To give some back story, i've had some digestive 'irregularities' going back about 2.5 years, very similar to the symptoms listed there.

symptoms first appeared in about may of 2006, since then, i've lost about 10 pounds, and generally been pretty miserable. Chronic flatulence, constantly irritated bowels and cramping, etc.

At the end of this march, i noticed that some of the symptoms would ease when i wasn't drinking milk or eating milk products. I proceeded to eliminate diary products as best as i could from my diet, and felt noticeably better, though not nearly perfect.

For several months, up until i moved home for the summer, i felt pretty decent and my symptoms weren't affecting my life negatively. However within about 2 weeks, many of the old symptoms had returned. I also noticed that the lactaid that previously had been working had seemed to stop working. after a particularly bad two weeks, i went in get checked on thursday, and the doctor seemed pretty convinced that i have both coeliacs and lactose intolerance, and right now i am just waiting on the test results to confirm it and eliminate other problems, ie crones disease or bacterial infections, etc. as to why the spring had been relatively tolerable, i didn't eat much in terms of grains for months, since i had much better access to fruits and vegetables, and had stopped eating cereals entirely.

So that said, how exactly am i supposed to adjust to a new diet that eliminates the sources of something like 50% of my previous caloric intake, as well as most of my favorite foods and drinks (beer:()? Anyone have some experience to guide the way?

I have a Type II Dairy Allergy. I found out I had it last November. It was difficult to adjust to initially, but it's a breeze now. Dairy is a difficult one because it's in EVERYTHING - bread, crackers, etc. But, once you adjust, you find out it's not so bad...it's not that you can't have any food to eat, you just have to choose different things to eat.

Also, Coeliacs and Lactose Intolerance Symptoms are very, very close. Before last November, I went off Wheat-based products for a year because I thought I had a Gluten Allergy. It helped because I was cutting out a lot of dairy (all the stuff that was in wheat-based products like bread), but not completely because dairy was the culprit. Tracking down allergies is very difficult. I believe I've had my dairy allergy since I was about 9, when I had a major kidney surgery. My best guess is that the surgery caused a chemical imbalance, which triggered the dairy allergy. Anyway...I was sick pretty much every day until last November, then things did a complete 180 and I started feeling lightyears better.

Let me know what your results are...I have a great dairy-free meal plan set up right now that you might like to try. Best of luck man!

One thing you need to be aware of, even if you think you're avoiding dairy or gluten, you may not be.

Gluten is in almost everything, it's not as simple as just cutting out bread. (I believe it is what makes food taste good at this point).
