Oh Crap...Bought an iPod Mini on a whim without doing HW

Just started a job, got paid yesterday, so went out and bought an iPod at MicroCenter for $250 - $50 MC Mail-in store coupon (for signing up for their credit card).

I like it a lot so far, but I'm still recovering from the price. I can still return it, but I probably won't unless I have very compelling reasons to.

So, this thread is get some opinions on whether or not I should keep this thing. What are some negatives about the iPod Mini that I should know about?

Also, MC offered a 1yr extended warranty for $25 - which includes battery replacement if needed. So should I get this, since I heard the older generation iPod had a very crappy battery.

Thanks ahead for any suggestions!

1) its an ipod
2) not enough space
3) its an ipod
4) not so great sound quality
5) questionable battery life
6) IMO a horrid interface

Ipod Mini wouldn't have been my choice.. most retailers a 20Gb 4Gen is $30 more. I'd rather have the bigger space, for the bigger size, hell they're still tiny. ( but that all depends on your music *cough*collection.*cough* )

ipod mini has too little space...if u still need only 5 gigs, i'd recommend the creative zen micro. 5 gig but built-in FM radio and voice recording.

See if you can sell it online and get some of that money back. Then you can buy something you actually want.

Sell it and try to find a Best buy that still has the iRiver IHP-120 in stock. They have them on clearance for $214. It kicked the iPod's ass on all the reviews. I'm a big fan of mine 🙂.

I wouldn't have gotten one because it's very lacking in the storage department.

Yup, i would have gone with creative's version instead of apple's one if you were getting an ipod mini

Yeah, or you could just keep the Ipod. I'm assuming that you at least checked the storage capacity and that 5GB is enough for you. I think it's sort of presumptuous of people to assume that everyone needs more storage space than that. If you like your ipod, that is a compelling reason to keep it.

if you like it alot then keep it. If you think you'll save more by going to the creative muvo 2 ( usually onsale for 150$ @ outpost.com) or if you need more space (IPOD 20gig) then go right ahead.

It's actually a present for my sister and she likes it, so we're going to keep it. Right now, my main concern is about the battery problem that plagued the earlier iPods and I'm wondering if the $25 Micro Center extended warranty is worth it - it covers a year after Apple's warranty is over.

And one of the biggest reason I chose the iPod Mini is because of the thumb wheel; it doesn't seem like there are any other players out there that has an intuitive and fast control to scroll through the collection to find the song you want.

well, i still have and use one of the original 5gb ipods from when they were first introduced, and only worked on apples, and mine still works fine, it's banged up and scratched, but made itwell over the 18 month period they always talk about.

I'm not a fan of any iPod, but dear christ, why would you want an iPod Mini, the amount of storage space is just pitiful for the price :-/

I have an iRiver iHP-140 and I have no major quibbles at all...

I'm with theblackbox here, my iPod (10gb, got it Christmas of 2002, whatever generation that may be) has lasted well over the 18 month mark without trouble. And it's had it's share of abuse as well, big dent in one corner from dropping the thing on a concrete floor once. Still works great though. Never had any problems with sound quality, but even I will admit that the earbuds packaged with the iPod sound pretty poor in comparison to other headphones. I like my in ear headphones much better.

But techtv says the ipod pwnz all teh otherz 😉

Keep it. The iPod mini has the best interface out there.

I have the 3rd generation iPod 15 GB, and I'm going to replace it with an iPod mini when the 6 GB comes out.

Get the MC warranty if you can. It sounds like they just offer that much extra protection, which is really what you need. And don't listen to the others: the iPod and iPod mini sound just fine and have very usable battery life. Too many people dwell on featuritis. I don't want an MP3 player with an FM tuner - I thought the whole *point* was to get away from the radio!

People need to stop commenting about subjective stuff and stating it as fact. The interface will be hated and liked by different people, its a preference.

Personally I didn't care for it, but who cares what I think.

Everytime a MP3 player thread pops up, I always say the same thing. Don't get one, get a PDA instead. Pocket PC based. Axims tend to be the best deal out there. Example... low end X30 + 512 MB SD card (after rebates) + extended battery (off ebay) you could pull off at under $300. And good god the functionality of it is 100 times what you get out of a MP3 player. Watch movies (dicx, xvid, mpeg1/2/4), play games, surf the net, takes notes for class, it's limitless (within reason).

That is my reccomendation anyways. I originally wanted an MP3 player and after research, nothing was attractive for the price. Sure a PDA doesn't have the storage, but do you really need all that music at your fingertips? I haven't checked recently, but I probably have over 30 gigs of mp3 and I'm prefectly happy with my 256 & 512 SD cards that I reload with fresh tracks every couple days. And with the extended battery, if you just use it for MP3's, it will last you all day long (normal battery at constant mp3 use will last about 5 hours), which is a lot more than people need between charges.

I don't blame you if you want to go with an MP3 player, but first, take a look around first, and at least get rid of the iPod and get something else.

PDAs make lousy MP3 players. If you want a bulky unit that costs more and does a bit of everything, get a PDA, but if you want an MP3 player, buy an MP3 player. And the iPod mini is the best one out there.

On top of these excellent, important, and very numerous reasons:

7) questionable battery longevity (this & battery life per charge are seperate issues)
8) its an ipod
9) iPod minis have a known issue with the headphone jack; cheap connection to the pcb tends to break partially or fully within weeks/months, leading to crackling audio or no audio at all
10) possible problems manipulating music you legally own due to piracy concerns
11) its an ipod
12) no flac/ogg/wma support
13) overpriced for the quality & features
14) its an ipod
15) forces use of iTunes (buggy) or third-party software (unsupported) to transfer music to it
