is this worth the purchase? I have received a few suggestions that this is a cheap, yet worthy purchase as long as I season it right after I buy it and take care of it. Opinions?
 
Well, its walmart, so it was probably made by a 5 year old chinese boy in a smelting plant with no protective equipment, or whatever.
 
There are many threads on this, but to recap:

Get a lodge brand (cracker barrell, wal-mart, amazon)

They can be a pain to clean *if used improperly* i.e. no odd fruity marinades and etc. I've found worch sauce and mustard doesn't stick at all and seems to help with the coating.

DO NOT WASH WITH SOAP

actually Lodge is a US company. in fact one of the oldest.

OP: yeah if you NEED it now sure go to walmart and buy it. IF you don't mind waiting hit some auctions/garage sales. you can get them for like $2. I got a 5 different sizes for $5 at a garage sale 3 years ago.

Lodge cast iron cookware is made in the USA. They use the same molds and materials to make the cast iron they sell on amazon as the ones sold at Walmart.

It's the same pan. That being said, I have the 12" skillet and it's pretty good. Even though it's pre-season, I highly advise you to season it before use.
 
Its fine. But you might get one even cheaper by checking thrift stores.

You might have to wait awhile. Around here, it's mostly Chinese stuff that turns up in the thrift shops. If you have time to wait, that's a fine idea though. Flea markets would probably be better for getting it now; especially if you have some large ones in your area. That only applies to the flea markets with a lot of used stuff. The ones with new Chinese crap aren't likely to have much.
 
I just received one of these for Christmas. I have used it twice, once for steaks (AB style) and fried some pork chops last night. I think it is great, and I highly recommend it. As others have said, it is preseasoned, and I haven't seasoned it again yet. Well worth the purchase IMO.
 
Cast iron has its place but I don't really think it is good for your main everyday pan. It depends on what you cook, though, and what your cleaning habits are. You can't leave cast iron sitting around dirty all day. Certain dishes are more trouble than they're worth in cast iron versus a true nonstick pan. I mean if I'm trying to make something simple like enchiladas, I don't want to be mixing around cheese and tomato sauce and chicken in a cast iron versus a true nonstick pan. Its a no brainer which one is going to be easier.

Frankly cleaning it can be a hassle compared to other pans. I use an oil and salt mixture and rub it around to get off extra bits of gunk. But with my nonstick pans I can soak them scrub them with soap, and/or put them in the dishwasher like any other dish.

I started off really liking cast iron for its novelty, but now that its worn off I tend to only use it for high heat for browning.
 
Hmm... I use cast iron exclusively for pan work. Mine never sticks, and cleanup could hardly be any easier. I rinse it under hot water, and make a few swipes with a copper pad. It then goes on a hot burner for a minute to dry it.
 
i seasoned mine with lard when i first got a few years ago...now its non-stick!

Cook bacon in it a few times and it'll be a great non-stick pan as well.

And for whoever made the Chinese comment, Lodge is an American company that has been producing pans in Tennessee for over a hundred years. Their enameled pans do actually come from China, but the regular cast iron ones do not.
