So there's going to be another "Take your Son or Daughter to Work" day coming up, for kids ages 8 through 18. We'll feed them breakfast and lunch and have people explain what the different jobs are about and give everyone some trinket to take home. I think the idea is fine... let kids see what different careers are like.

However, what happens in reality is different. We will have some parents who think the event is really called "Give your kids a rest from daycare day" and will bring toddlers to work. Kids will quickly figure out that an office provides no visual or auditory stimulation and within 15 minutes they will be looking for a place to hide. They will not see a single exciting thing happening all day. Ooh, piles of papers! People sitting in a room, and talking to each other! Oh, wait.... here comes the mail! I can't take the excitement! I can look forward to hearing kids running up and down the long hallways because they are bored to tears by 9 AM.

What would actually work is having kids here for about two hours - enough to tour different areas and hear a short explanation of what is done in each area. Then let the kids decide if they want to come back at a later date for a full day and check out one or two areas. Too many of these kids just wanted a day out of school, only to quickly find out working in an office isn't exactly a day full of heart-pounding thrills.

Solution: set up Rockband in the break room.

You win if you get the CEO playing by the end of the day.

Good idea but it doesn't work. The kids are so miserable the parents start taking them to the food area at 11 AM when lunch doesn't start until 11:30.

Most people have their own offices here but we have a huge aquarium, spare toy basket, and weapons in each office; enought to keep kids of all ages occupied for a few hours. Sadly no one would dare expose their offspring to our office without the fear of permanent mental damage.

My 13 year old twin sisters spent the morning with my dad at Microsoft and the afternoon with me at <large company x> last year. I just took them along on my regular troubleshooting and project meetings. After a two-hour requirements session that was sheer agony I asked them to describe to me what we were doing. They could describe the requirements better than the people who'd been giving them. Wish I could hire them and fire a few "bright minds" around here.

My Dad had the coolest job ever when I was growing up and I loved to go to work with him. He was General Foreman for the City of Minneapolis Sewer Department and I got to ride on and drive heavy equipment, eat ethnic food and, watch my Dad explain to city planners why they couldn't do what they wanted to without bringing the city to a halt.

After I became a Chef, I have spoken quite a few times in schools talking about what a Chef does but, a kitchen is not place for a group of people to sight see, there just isn't enough room.

My dad took me to work a few times when I was a kid. I had a great time - I loved shredding papers and he had plenty for me to do. It was an office full of engineers too, so they also had Quake tournaments at lunch.
