I'm having a REALLY rough night. I can't sleep. The first day of class is tomorrow - I need to somehow fall asleep. I have to go to work, too...

Basically, here are my symptoms:
- Sore throat (swollen glands, red and swollen throat, lots of pain)
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Muscle pain and stiffness

^^ I've been like this the whole day.

The main problem is my throat. I can't really swallow - if I do, it hurts REALLY BAD. I can't even swallow my own saliva. It hurts too much to eat - even chicken noodle soup. I tried to drink some chamomile tea with honey, but it didn't really help either.

My throat lozenges make me puke. I'd taken 3, puked twice... the third one i just spat out because I could feel it coming.

For my fever, I've been taking Tylenol, which seems to help for a couple hours at a time.

My intake has been hot tea, gatorade, chicken soup, and apple sauce.

I can't sleep because my entire body hurts, especially my throat. I can't swallow, so I keep choking on my saliva. When my fever goes up, I'm freezing cold and just stay awake.

I'm feeling very hopeless right now... I really need some help.

don't go to school/work

go to student health.

forget AT.

best advice you will ever get here.

alternatively:

Down a bottle of NyQuil. Wake up, suck it up, and go to class. (not advised....)

EDIT: oh, try Ginger Ale

I _MUST_ go to school, work I could probably skip. If I miss my first day of any class, I'm dropped.

And yea, I'm definitely going to the student health center... it's just not open RIGHT NOW. Right now, I need a way to fall asleep. I'm taking nyquil into consideration - but that would require a couple hours of waiting since I just took some Tylenol :'(

well, then don't take NyQuil. You won't wake up for a day or two.

Are you expected to run a particle collider tomorrow? The first day of class is always expendable. You do know how to talk to professors, right?

Not sure why you HAVE to go to the first day of class but that aside, your symptoms are way to general to pin down to any one thing (could be anything from flu to lyme disease). Go to the health center and have a real professional take a look at you. Can't you just show the prof your doctor's note and have that as your excuse?

For those of you who wonder why he HAS to be there first day of class.

Poor baby. I hope you're feeling better. You sound mega stressed out on top of being sick. I hope you got into the Student health center first thing.

Dude, this kinda sounds like Strep throat, lousy bug to catch before the first day of school. I'm not too familiar with how your Student Health Center functions, but they'll probably take a throat culture, or refer you to a place that does, and you'll get on some antibiotics.

Sounds pretty much like strep to me, that sucks. I can't believe if you miss the first day and have a real excuse (from the doctor) that they would still drop you from the class.... but I dunno what things are like at your school.

If you have been vomiting then don't go to school. Go to somewhere that will give you a medical note, and I'd be surprised if that's not a valid excuse.

well I'm sitting here in the health center waiting room posting from my phone. I should be seeing a doctor in about ten min.

I'm really hoping that whatever I have is bacterial so we can knock it out quickly. I guess I'll know soon enough.

Thanks guys. Oh and I never fell asleep. 🙁

I had something similar to this when I was in Basic Training and HAD to get back to train. Sounds bacterial so Augmentin + 800mg Motrin is your best friend.

Advice from me as a nurse. Though don't take this as official advice, talk to a doctor/PA/CNP.

Tylenol for the fever, if pills hurt, get the liquid tylenol. Take it as long as you have the fever, just dont exceed 4000mg over a 24 hour period
Treat the symptoms, you'll be miserable but will start to get better in a few days. That means keep up the tylenol, nyquil/dayquil whatever it takes to allow you to make it through the day. Keep up your fluid regimen, it's very easy to get yourself dehydrated while sick and make things worse.

And get checked out by a doctor. You may need antibiotics and/or a one time dose of steroids.

As long as you are 100% sure you aren't contagious... I remember they had to shut down a whole school during the SARS outbreak in my city after some girl "had to go to school". Got her class quarantined too.

well, the bloodwork showed that I have strep, and it's pretty bad. I ended up getting a rash all around my body.

I got a z-pack for antibiotics and some Tylenol with codein for pain and fever. I was able to sleep for about 4 hours after taking the medicine, so I feel relatively much better.

I made copies of my doctors note, wrote a small letter, and dropped them off at my professors' offices. All should be well.

Thanks for the help and for assuring me it wasn't a tumah!

Try to get some rest and not worry about school or work for a bit.
