Main points :-

  • All of the RC5 FAQ's say how to stop OGR being done by the client, so maybe a little reverse advice could be given, ie. doing OGR only.

  • All of the other information like using the TA proxy, general client setup options (like buffering).

  • How to get through a firewall :)

In terms of tutorials, as Distributed.net use the same client for both contests, one can generally apply (with slight editing) to the other.

Oh and as a recommendation, make it easy to follow and easy to read - nobody likes to read a long column of text that seems to go on forever but not go anywhere.

Also as another idea, use HTML commands to make the text and any pictures resize to fit the browser window - this way people can display the tutorial on one half of the screen and configure the client on the other (without having to scroll in the explorer window).

sciencewhiz: I'm glad to see this work is being performed. If I think of anything to add to the page I will send it to you.

vss,

Those were the kind of things that I was thinking of.

I wasn't sure whether to tailor it towards people who have never cracked before, or people who are switching from RC5. Maybe i'll do a page for people switching and then a full blown tutorial for newbies.

Paulson,

I don't mind. let me know when you get apache running.

I don't know if you included it or not, but ViRGE's speed page includes the correct OGR CPU performance, where presently Mika's does not.

This would be highly useful.

Its not awesome... YET! Its still under construction.

Viz,

I was planning on linking to ViRGE's page, unless Mika updates his page before I finish. :)

I have submitted a lot of speed benchmarks (RC5 and OGR) to dnet but never to Mika's or Virge's place.

RC-

Have you benched a Duron with the 8010-463b client in Windows?
I know you are using Linux on the 'rack, but the benches on ViRGE's site are all based on that.

If I remember correctly Dnet lumps together the 8010-462 and the 8010-463b clients together under the 8010 header. I believe that this is unfortunate due to significant improvements with the 463b over the 462 in OGR and with Athlons on RC5 in Windows. But conversely better OGR Linux performance with the 462 over the 463b <insert disclaimer here> YMMV.

I know that you have worked with this very issues RC, so this would be a good thread to bring that up.

All the OGR/Duron benchmarks on dnets page are greater than what is possible with OGR/Linux/462 dnet client.

Yes, the 462 client is better than the 463 client for OGR/Linux.

Some of the Duron numbers on the dnet page may be flawed, but I don't believe all of them are flawed.

I would love to poll all of our OGR members to see if any of them are using Linux. If they are using Linux have they compared it with OGR/WIN32/463b dnet client.

I have sent an email to dnet but did not receive a reply.

RC,

my main machine (P3 500) dual boots linux and Windows 98se. I haven't done any benchmarks to compare the 2. Because of the speed difference, I let the client run RC5 when I am in linux.

From you last post, it sounds like I should try 462 and 463 in linux and compare to 463b in win98?

I would TRULY appreciate if you would do this. I really would like a second person to verify this problem. Part of the issue could be specific to AMD K7 processors. If you don't have an AMD K7 processor then an Intel will work.
