Officials Seek End to Flavored Cigarettes

Officials Seek End to Flavored Cigarettes

Government bureaucrats, the poeple who elect them, won't be happy until we are all living under the lowest common denominator. They say that "it's for the children." No, it isn't. Parents are the ones who are responsible for their children, not the government. And they also say that they are doing it for the young adults so they won't start smoking. Perhaps they forget the "adult" part.

I wish they would just ban all cigarettes. Those things are disgusting.

right, and while we're at it why don't they just ban anything else that you happen to feel is disgusting....if I felt that 100% of what you post is crap does that mean we should ban you?

Flavored cigs are being geared toward children (no matter what the execs say).

Targeting minors is illegal under the settlements with the Federal government.

Agreed. If someone wants to smoke, let them. They really need to stay the fuvk out of peoples personal lifes.

Is menthol and 'original' geared towards children too?

Finally an issue I don't have to care about: I'm allergic to tobacco 🙂

Well, while I don't disagree with you, I don't want to ban them. Just because you and I find it disgusting doesn't mean everyone does, and we don't have a right to tell people what they can and can't like. This is where the difference between Conservatives and Libertarians come into play: Conservatives don't differentiate between Sins and Crimes, while Libertarians do. Something may be immoral (and I think Smoking IS immoral because it's an action that destroys your body) but that doesn't mean it should be illegal. A smoker in his own private space doesn't harm any third party, and that's the relevant issue.

yes cigarettes are disguting.. that's my opinion. but if people want to smoke them, then let them; they know the dangers. but i think they should be banned in public spaces... your choice to smoke doesn't supercede my choice not to. i choose to hang around people who smoke, but i should be allowed not to.

While it's true that smoking is a personal decision, my paying for your lung cancer down the line brings me into the equation.

damn right. now THAT needs to be fixed. if you smoke then don't expect me to bail your ass out. smokers know the dangers and they should be 100% free to choose, but also 100% responsible.

This is the Government you want so you have no business whining.

Here's a quarter, call someone who cares...

 I wonder how many kids who had parents that smoked have health problems later on in their lives?

This is a grey area. At what point does the money trump personal freedom?
If you choose to smoke, then you choose to pay for the consequences. Problem solved.
Kinda like abortions.

And can we also tell that to people who don't eat healthy? I mean really? Where do you stop if you start down the road with that premise?
If we increase Insurance premiums for smokers - shouldn't we also increase it for other "high risk" behaviors like unhealthy eating?
How about involuntary wealth transfers and other things we all have to pay for - can we put restrictions on those monies too? I'd love to see WIC be available only to those women who have had their tubes tied because it was their responsibility to close their legs - not mine.
I'm sure I could come up with some other non-"PC" examples too but continue on with the all to popular punching bag that is tobacco.

*********
I would love to see personal responsibility become the rule, but it better be taken all the way.

Exactly. If you choose to have sex, you choose the possibility of having a child. Problem solved.
