Officially losing the last item of my bachelorhood

So the wife has finally laid the smack down and said I need to get rid of my baby.

For the last 5 years I've been driving a 2-door 2001 Honda Prelude with a 5 speed transmission. Its been a great car and I enjoyed it a lot.

But my wife can't drive it (and trying to teach her is like pulling teeth) so I'm throwing in the towel. The mileage is getting up there any way and it sucks down oil and gas like there's no tomorrow. I don't have space for a 3rd car (nor do I really want one) so the Prelude's gotta go.

So I need to replace it with something with 4 doors and an automatic. Mileage is also very important (with the 3 dollar gas and a 60 mile round trip commute each day). Its gotta be Japanese or German and my budget is around $20K - $26K.

Obvious contenders here are the Camry, Accord, and Altima. Every fiber of my being cringes at having to replace my baby with these old man cars, but such is life.

Any other recommendations from the good folks at ATOT?

IMO, the Accord is no old man car. You could also go for an Acura for not a lot more to get something a little more interesting.

$20K - $26K? Accord hands down. The I-4 is decently peppy and gets 26MPG+ in the city (most drivers see 28-30 actually). Camry is nice also, just not my taste. I hear the Altima handles like a damn yacht. I've driven an I-4 Accord sedan automatic and it is rather nice. Coupe is better tho 😛

My wife's already got a TSX, and its a great car. I'll get to drive it enough so I probably would want to get something different.

it's gotta be japanese or german so you pick the french altima? wtf? i don't consider nissan up there with toyota or honda or even ford, after having one. POS.

See if you can find a nice lightly used Legacy GT. It's a nice, grown-up car with a nice interior, room for baby, AWD etc, but even with the automatic it goes like hell. It does like the gas, though.

Heh, I had to sale my 2000 Mustang when our second rugrat was on the way and get a minivan. The Mustang was functionally useless at that point. There was no way I could get a babyseat and a toddler seat into the backseat.

I'm currently driving a Nissan Pathfinder. It's a '95 with almost 300k miles on it. My current plan is to drive it into the ground and get a nice four-door sedan when that happens.

Man up, I taught my wife to drive my 2 seat rear drive mid engined car with a standard transmission and making 15psi of boost. 😀 If I ever have kids, one can go in the front trunk and one can go in the rear. 😉

Why do you have to get rid of YOUR card? Make the wife get rid of hers.

She's got a 2005 Acura TSX...even I couldn't tell her to get rid of hers with a straight face 😉

If your wife has a car, why do you need a different one just because she can't drive it?

She drives to night classes once a week after work...those days her commute is more than 100 miles round trip.

Right now the Acura TSX she has is getting pounded with miles because of that. We want to kind of balance out the mileage between the cars.

We've only had the TSX one year and its got more than 27,000 miles on it already.

mazdaspeed 6. you will have a bad ass sedan and keep your manhood to boot.

Whats the quality on the Mazda 6's these days? I haven't heard great things. How does it compare to the Altima in terms of quality. I'd assume both are behind Camry and Accords.

Hyundai Accent, totally tricked out, 28mpg city, for $14,500 + ttl, FTW!!!

My dad told me to get a Kia when I told him I need to get a new car...my wife and I laughed about it for about 5 minutes.

Are the Hyundai's and Kia's actually decent cars now?

supposedly their better, but I wouldn't buy one

Check out Subaru, their mid size sedan/wagon isn't so "main stream". Granted to save on fuel costs I wouldnt go with the legacy GT

Honda Civic or new Camry, Civic gets great milage and looks good. But personally I think the new Camry looks badass.
