this may be repost, but to find out 6xx sequence processors

simply filter on DESKTOP for chassis. the 5xx are listed under MINITOWER and the new 8400 6xx processors are listed as DESKTOP.

great way to find those babies.... 😀

yeah use the same trick to get you the XPS EE's. but they are all 800 FSB EE's 🙁 not that much 1066 3.46 and definitely no 3.73 yet

Thanks for the info. Will have to use it next time. Is there a performance difference betwen the 5xx and 6xx CPUs on the Dells?


 
Ahh - sure would'e been nice to know the reason 😉

I guess I stumbled upon this inadvertently - I was using the Desktop filter to eliminate small form factor and microtower cases, because I like larger cases (more room to work with, will be adding FireWire cards to both, etc) - and I picked up two 640-based XP Pro 8400s for a better-than-warm but not-quite-searing deal on Friday.

They are coming standard with new 8400's now, so not even warm, IMO. People who buy computers on ebay see Ghz.

Hmm - maybe not worthwhile for reselling (which, incidentally, I confirmed - their ToS prohibits, but they obviously ignore 😉 ).

But for personal use, the better motherboard, with more PCI slots (I need at least 2, so 3 is good!), more capable FSB (1066 max, IIRC?) and more L2 cache is certainly worth a slight premium!

The 8400 motherboard uses the 925X chipset (800FSB max). The XPS uses a 925XE chipset that can run 1066FSB.

Ahh - darn. I thought the 6xx and the 5xx CPUs had different MoBos in use in the 8400.

Is it an off-the-shelf MoBo, or a Dell-specific one? Probably the latter (and therefore, irreplaceable)? My first-ever not-self-assembled PC!
 
They are Dell specific in regards to the mounting holes, and PSU compatibility, but in other regards they are OEM Intel motherboards.

Oh, don't worry, this thread will stay alive. In a few days, or a week, or in an hour, Dell will have another deal for refurb's. 🙂

Some people are still finding systems. XPS systems are still on sale.

There is only a slight PSU compatibility problem: the case has no cut out for a power switch on the back of the PSU. Otherwise it's 100% ATX 12v compatible. Dell hasn't used funky PSUs in desktops* since the Pentium 3. It's kinda funny how that lives on and on year after year, mostly because of uninformed posts like your's keeping the myth alive.

The microtower cases (23x0/2400/4600/4700) can mount microATX boards fine. The 4600/4700 use the same case design, aside from front/side panel changes, as the 23x0 and 2400. I received my 4700 and 8400 a few days ago and I don't see any problem replacing the motherboard in the 4700. The 8400 is much different and it might take extra work to mount a microATX board in it. microATX boards mount with no modification in the 23x0/2400/4600/4700 cases:

With a careful choice of motherboard, the stock exhaust fan can be used with a passive heatsink for quiet cooling. The pictures above are an Asus motherboard and AthlonXP 2400+ mounted in a 23x0/2400 case. The internals on the 4600/4700 are identical.

*excluding the newer small form factor cases (4700C/GX280 and SX280), which like all SFF cases use a variation of microATX PSUs to fit the particular case.
