the zune looks super nice, but the things i dont like are no physical buttons for volume or track changing (i would love to keep the thing in my pocket and make adjustments without having to bring it out and see it)

I must be getting old, what's the point of spending $290 on 32GB when you can buy an older Zune for less that stores 120GB? At this current price point I could buy a netbook...

I sold my original Zune and have waited for the new ones, but I don't see the point now. I guess I'll snag an old one before they are gone.

Size? HD-based MP3 players are bricks compared to flash based players. It also has features the 120 doesn't have, like HD radio.

I personally don't understand why someone would want to have a brick in their pocket just to have that much space. I never even filled my Zune 16.

you're getting it for the "smartphone" capabilities. At least that's my view on the iPod Touch. It's not about putting your whole damn collection on there. For me it's about having SOME music but having the apps, or as Apple calls it, the funnest iPod.

I understand the old Zune is larger, but for me personally it didn't feel like a brick in my pocket. It's not much bigger then my cell phone.

See I'm old then, the less I have to swap songs the better. Maybe I have ADD too cause I grow tired of hearing the same songs so frequently so 32GB is too small.

I haven't heard HD radio so it may be something I'm over looking.

Meh, I'd sooner snag a scratch & dent Dell netbook, and run Pandora. Just read a few reviews, the OLED screen is pretty nice looking, but I've really never been one for PMP's either I guess...

Um... what? You realize this thing is like 1/8 the size of a netbook, right? And it runs about 4x as long, too. :)

I love my Zune HD. The screen is beautiful, battery life is good. Feels very well built and is really sleek.

Audio is great.. love the interface.. Zunepass + social features + channels really bring the level of awesome higher for me.

Until I got my hands on this thing, I used to think my iPhone was light at 4.7 ounces.. but this 32GB zune HD weighing in at 2.6 makes it feel heavy.

I've been using this thing for about a week now. Granted I dont do a ton of web browsing, it really isn't that bad. Renders pages nearly as well as my G1, and actually renders them faster. Yes I ran those javascript benchmarks and got similar results, but in practice the browser ain't half bad.

I have to say, I'm not that impressed with the zune hd. I need to find someone who wants to trade for a itouch!

Why is there this obsession of watching movies on your PMP? I mean it's obvious a lot of people copy 700mb rips of movies onto their iPod touch or Zune but to then downscale to an even crappier resolution and what not.... you're getting a terrible viewing experience in terms of the screen size, image quality, everything. Why bother? Shrug. I mean if you really want to, go ahead, but iwth people complaining about the iPod's 320x480 screen and the Zune HD being lower res (I forget the exact #s), I can't imagine how good stuff will look.

I like having a couple of videos on my iPhone for when I get bored at work. And sometimes it just isn't feasible to take a laptop everywhere.

I use my iphone to stay caught up on shows like Entourage and Dexter and to watch some movies while I'm at the gym. The screen size is sufficient for viewing on a bike at the gym, on the bus, or on a plane. No waiting for a netbook or something to boot up either.

That said, there are very fast and efficient video to iphone and video to zune converters available that make it unnecessary to support a gajillion different codecs.

Zune HD has HDMI out TV doc with remote. If it played DivX over WiFi Storage, could be used as HTPC.

Considering it can do neither at the moment, I'd suggest you look into an Archos 5 or re-rip your video. You do own it, right? DivX is a lame format, it needs to die the death it has always deserved.

I'm still disappointed with the ZHD for a few reasons:
1. Can't download podcasts over WiFi directly. Considering 2/3 of what I use my Zune for is podcasts, that sucks.
2. Can't act as a DLNA/UPnP client (eg, stream stuff on the computer to the ZHD, like I do with my 360), even when docked.
3. No built-in mail/calendaring/contacts ala the iPod Touch.
4. No Netflix support (aka, insane killer app).
5. No volume rocker (I predict a 100% chance of this being on the Zune HD G2).
6. Resolution is a bit low - would have liked to have seen 640x360 instead.

That's not to say I wouldn't buy one if my current Zune 30 died - I'd do it without a second thought - but it does make me hesitate somewhat to take the initiative. The good news is, this stuff is almost all correctable by software AND there's the rumor of the Zune phone getting announced at CES.

I'm super tempted to get a ZuneHD to replace my Zune30 but the lack of buttons is killing me. I also wouldn't mind a 64 GB option. I don't need all my music with me but it's a bit of a pain to want to listen to something that I neglected to sync with the device. I think for now I'm just going to wait until the 30 dies which should be soon based on how much effort it takes the turn the thing on these days.

One question can you create smart playlists on the fly with the ZuneHD?

not quite enough an effort from a company big as ms when competing with ipod. shoulda atleast matched the ipod in more areas.. not enough.

Why do people think this has to be a carbon copy of the iPod Touch? Is it competing with the Touch? Yes. Is it supposed to be a feature-for-feature exact replacement? No! Not at all. It doesn't do the 'pda-in-a-pmp' things as well as the iPod Touch, but it does the 'pmp-as-a-pmp' things better.

errm. its competing with the ipod touch..thats why. to compete you have at the very least match your competitors offering and optimally offer something above and beyond. if not your price should be lower. so you see how it doesn't add up. if it were just a music player they wouldn't have included apps or a web browser so don't give me the line that they weren't trying to compete. they clearly were and fell short. its an ok device in a world without ipod touches..or if it had come out before the ipod touch existed. but the bar is higher than that now. we arent' talking some small companys attempt, this is the behemoth ms, and one should expect more from them.
those reviews are rather dubious, they gloss over the problems pointed out in the other article.

It DOES do things better than the competition. As a PMP, the ZuneHD is superior to the iPod Touch. It is also a hybrid between the iPod touch style and the iPod Nano style. No further proof is needed other than the fact that they've removed their old line from the market. The ZuneHD competes with the iPod Touch, and it competes with the iPod Nano. It is not intended to be a carbon copy of either. Doing exactly what your competitor has done is a perfect way to not gain any market share - if the Zune were an EXACT clone of the iPod Touch, it would lose. Why? Because the Touch is the market leader, it is the known brand, why would people ditch it? They need to offer something different, and something better in its own way - which is what they've done.

I would never even consider an iPod Touch, I already have a smartphone, why do I need two all-in-one devices? I got a Zune HD because it is a superior media device - in fact, the biggest reservation I had to buying it wasn't the fact that it didn't have an app store - it was the fact that it had an all touch screen interface. I didn't like it because it was TOO MUCH like the iPod Touch.

Are there people that disagree with me? Of course, and those people will buy the Touch. However, there will be plenty of people with my opinion, too.

Answer me this - the Kindle includes a web browser and an MP3 player. To the rational mind, these were added as extra features, to make the device a little more appealing - not as the primary feature of the device, and not to make the Kindle a smartphone replacement. Are you going to tell me that the Kindle should be considered a failure, because it doesn't offer the same all-in-one experience too? (note: I am well aware that there is in fact a Kindle app in the app store. That actually adds to my point)

Dubious? They praise it for what it is designed to be - a media player. In fact, Gizmodo loves the browser and implores Microsoft to put it in Windows Mobile - and the Browser is something earlier articles (such as ars) attacked. Read the first sentence - hell, the URL - of the Gizmodo review. Obviously they are not viewing the Zune HD as a smartphone replacement, which you stubbornly insist it MUST be in order to be successful.
