Official: Yemen Releases 170 Al-Qaida Suspects

Oh goodie! I didn't know the US could simply release anyone in Gitmo so long as they sign a pledge never to do any bad stuff ever again. It's so simple! Obama is sure to adopt this technique, don't you think?

Official: Yemen Releases 170 Al-Qaida Suspects
Yemen releases 170 al-Qaida suspects after they sign pledges to refrain from terrorism

Yemen released 170 men it had arrested on suspicion of having ties to al-Qaida, security officials said Sunday, two weeks after the terror group announced that Yemen had become the base of its activities for the whole Arabian peninsula.

The announcement also comes as government forces say they are poised to sweep through the northern city of Marib to combat an entrenched al-Qaida presence that includes both Yemenis and Saudis.

The officials who announced the release spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to speak to the press.

The men were freed Friday and Saturday after signing pledges not to engage in terrorism ? a strategy the Yemeni government has often used with those suspected of fighting in militant causes abroad. Local tribal leaders are also expected to guarantee the good behavior of the released.

The practice stems in part from the powerful role played by the tribes across the rugged Yemeni countryside as well as the comparative weakness of the central government.

In the past, such releases have raised concern in the United States and increased its reluctance to release Yemeni detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility.

Yemen has said it expects most of the 100 remaining Yemenis at Guantanamo to be sent home after President Barack Obama ordered the prison shut within a year.

Elements of al-Qaida have long found a haven in Yemen's remote hinterland. Last month, Saudi al-Qaida fugitives in Yemen and their Yemeni associates announced in an Internet video that they were joining forces to form a single group.

On Saturday, Saudi Arabia issued a list of 85 most wanted living abroad that included two Yemenis. Many of the Saudis on the list are suspected of hiding out in Yemen as well.

Add Yemen to my list of shithole countries that need to be dealt with. Right after Pakistan. Which is right after Afghanistan. At least the terrorists are gathering in specific areas. Should make it easier to target them.

No. But it wouldn't surprise me if someone in his inner circle were to suggest it.

Well, if you think further ahead a bit, it makes total sense. Let them go and then deal with them on the battlefield? Maybe we could surgically install GPS trackers first?

Here, they're going to have to sign and afterwards they get a big hug and an understanding look.

Takes the fight right out of 'em.

They deserve it because someone poured water on their face.

Can we water board you for a bit and then shake it off with some hugs?

Do I get to go free even after killing people if I sign a piece of paper and promise to be good?

The Yemenis have their own problem (a Shiite insurgency in the north). These Al Qaeda fighters will no doubt join the state to fight the insurgency. Western concerns is the last thing on the Yemeni leaderships' mind when they're fighting for survival.

Nice hyperbole. From the article-

Yemen released 170 men it had arrested on suspicion of having ties to al-Qaida

Shucks, even flimsier grounds than the accusations against most of the gitmo captives...

Yemen is the kind of place where they'll arrest you if they feel like it, let you go on the same premises, and they've been sucking up mightily to the Bush Admin, getting paid for it, no doubt...

What's even more interesting is I think this guy has managed to get in a good Bush Bash -regardless of topic- in his last 284 consecutive posts...

Clearly none of you seen to be men of your word. If I made this promise I would be bound by it unconditionally. These folk are probably going to have to swear before Allah.

What if Allah told them through there Sheik that needed to break that promise though Moon :Q

The US should do something like this. Once the prisoners are released, the media will be interviewing them for a few months. There may even be a few made for TV specials about some of them. But in time people will forget who they were. This provides the perfect opportunity to assassinate them. They will simply disappear, one by one. No one will know. No one will care.

You are the no one. You don't care because you aren't human, you are dead. You are the walking dead, a zombie in a human body, a little ball of fear and cowardliness who wishes the things that cause his nightmares were dead. If you are the garbage that makes up our side it won't matter at all if they win. You them, all the same thing, the walking dead.

You will have to ask Allah. He will know if the promise has been broken, no?

Look you unoriginal chump, the name and the avatar are what they are because I have known for a very long time how imbeciles like you react to cold hard facts about their condition. Your ignorance, of course, in not your fault. You yourself were assassinated. It's why you think like you do. Careful now, don't laugh yourself to death.

You remind me of a man I met as I walked along the foot paths of the Appalachians. He was a tall, skinny fellow who would walk along with other hikers and explain the universe to them. Most people would tolerate him for about half an hour before they grew tired of his mindless ramblings.

He walked along with me for about ten minutes before I told him to leave. I explained to him that he was a complete fool, and that his views were so naive, even a child would dismiss them. He grew angry, and proceeded to "analyze" me in much the same way you have. He began spouting the same nonsense you regurgitate in nearly all of your useless posts. I just smiled and began walking away. I almost felt sorry for him.

That is how I see you moonbeam. That is why your posts make me laugh. Every time I read your posts, I'm reminded of that crazy fool.
