Just a question that I am sure I have asked and had anwered. They refer to the ALUs in the R580s pipeline as pixel processors, each pipeline has 3 pixel processors. Doesnt the 7800 have 2 pixel processors in each of its pixel pipes?

Each pixel shader has 2 ALU's on both Nv and Ati cards. When they say 48 pixel shaders, they really do mean 48 pixel shaders, with 2 ALU's each.

this question has been asked so many times, I just had to use bold text...

So I wonder what is holding back the performance of this chip? CPU performance?

Most probably drivers as has also been discussed. Most sites are using 5.13 catalysts that dont officially support the new cards.

I also cant wait for my favourite review sites to post.
Firing squad, Xbit, and Anand

Not so much the drivers. You give a card a bigger appetite for pixels, you will need a larger serving spoon to keep the appetite at bay. Anand's article stated it self, not all of the pixel processing units are being fully fed each clock cycle.

I probably wouldn't. I am more interested in smooth gameplay than I am in high quality imagery. With a card like the X1900, image quality is going to be high even with AA off but there's a performance penalty when turning that stuff on. I'd rather leave it off.

I see your point. Smooth gameplay + in-game visual effects come first before cranking up AA/AF. Though my 6800GT has been doing pretty good in FEAR with this at 1280x960. I wouldn't mind playing it at 1600x1200 with 8xAF though.....

I'm in the same boat. Will probably go with XT or XTX on this card soon. I'm sick of medium and low settings for the latest games.
