Late to this thread...

I was in a 401(k) conference down in Tampa (still here actually) and there was a big presentation going on while the US/Algeria game was being played. Unfortunately it was during one of the most important presentations and I absolutely could not miss it. I was sitting next to one of my co-workers who was getting text updates on the game. As the time dragged on from 45 to 60 to 80 minutes we figured it was going to end a draw. The update came in that it was still scoreless at 90 minutes and I was just waiting for the full time confirmation of a tie so I could focus on the presentation again.

Suddenly my co-worker punches me in the arm and whispers "we scored! we scored!" I could barely contain myself and looked around the auditorium and lots of other people were visibily excited and giving thumbs up and smiles to each other. Finally the presenter stopped and someone from the back of the room yelled out "We Scored!" And a whole bunch of folks in the back followed that up with the "GOOOOOOOOOOAAAL" call.

It was awesome.

That is an awesome football story

And now the angry part of my sentiments:

How can FIFA possibly tolerate the fact that Ireland was unfairly eliminated from the world cup and the US was nearly eliminated from two successive blown goal calls? All three calls would have been easily and quickly reversed with video review. It's shameful, rediculous, and indefensible that FIFA refuses to adopt this. The NHL has done it for years and there is no slippery slope. The only calls that get reviewed are goal/no-goal calls.

Just to be clear, I do not believe (as some others do) that anyone is out to "get" the U.S. or anyone else. I believe all three calls were legitimate mistakes, and I expect that Koman Coulibaly feels tremendous relief now that his blown call is meaningless as the US has won its group.

we'd have to get past the quarterfinals first and uruguay looks pretty good

Perhaps my last post this night, but I just wanted to echo this. Uruguay is an exceptional soccer nation, in my mind just a half step below Brazil and Argentina. I would be extatic it we beat Uruguay.

And not to get ahead of ourselves: Ghana is much stronger than Slovenia or Algeria. I would give the US a slight edge, but Ghana will the full support of all the African soccer fans in the stadium. The round of 16 will be very very difficult for the US. That said, the US has really shocked me with how well they've played and weathered adversity. I really think this group is capable of making a deep run.

to be fair, the Germans were dominant in that first game (sure...Aus), but Klose (sic?) went out early on some BS in game 2 and was out this match, and their other top player is injured, correct?

Yeah Schweinsteiger injured his hamstring.

Can NZ keep the dream alive against Paraguay tonight and secure a second place spot in their first ever world cup final series? I can't wait to see.

yea missing Schweinsteiger hurts. getting klose back will definitely help them out, and i think they will beat the English

i hope NZ can pull it out personally and knock the Italians out

I would enjoy that greatly. I would enjoy Slovakia kicking Italy's ass even more.
