I figured that all of us with the Wii have this game we might as well share some tips and tricks.

Tennis:
In general fairly easy, hit the ball at the top of the serve to send it flying fast. I cant really tell if Im putting any spin on the ball, and it doesnt seem to lob very well.

Baseball:
Ive noticed you have to swing earlier than you think, and its probably easier to hit home runs than to small ball runs in.

Golf:
Extremely frustrating, especially on short putts. I cant get the meter to read less than one bar on a swing.

Boxing:
Farily hard to control where your punches are going to be thrown. Plus I think the controls are a bit sensitive and Im throing punches when Im actually trying to duck and what not.

Bowling:

Line up with the second dot on the right and throw straight, Fairly easy to get a trike or at elast 8 pins down.

I think boxing is fun. The controls aren't always instantly reponsive, but then again it's because when you're playing it you're probably flailing your arms out at your opponent because you aren't used to the way things work yet.

someone on DT has mentioned that the Wii's UI is simply horrible

any thoughts?

its a easy one to fix though....updates over the net should sort that.

the same guy also mentioned the remote being abit frustrating to use, not so much in games, but in navigating the UI. he said he was trying alsorts of positions to get the wii to sense his inputs.

i have a grasp of how the wii-mote works in games (IR cone/field that the remote detects to work out its position in 3d space, then uses BT to send the data back) but for just UI navigation does it just use IR like a standard TV remote would?

generally i find tv remotes to work flawlessly, specially with new batteries they'll even work when you point them the wrong way, so maybe this guy got a dud?

he also mentioned that you cant really sit/be to the side of a tv.....it works much better directly infront of the TV, though this isnt alwasy possible is it.

So far, nothings beats the 360's UI. But that doesn't mean the Wii's is bad. If he sucks with the remote (it's not like a TV remote... it's more like a mouse), you can always navigate nearly every menu with the directional pad.

If you're using the sensor bar (for games that require pointing at the screen, like shooting arrows in Zelda, and not just general movement, like tennis), you obviously should not be standing to the side of the TV (why would you?). But I haven't experienced a single problem from any angle in which I can still see the TV clearly. In fact, I've even played golf while laying down, facing away from the TV.

EDIT: Also, my favorite Wii Sports games are the "target practice" for tennis, and "power throws" for bowling. I haven't had any problems with golfing like the guy mentioned above. My only issue is the somewhat-awkward controls in the boxing game, since I don't recall any tutorial on "which movements make which punches".

I love the golf, favorite wii sports game i think, and I can get it to read less than a full bar.
Bowling is awesome too.

Baseball is frustrating, but only when batting. Pitching is fun, until you realize you're not REALLY controlling the ball.

In other news, boxing feels weird (quick delivery, not what I'm used to), but otherwise it's great. Tennis is awesome.

My wife loves boxing, but it does wear you out. :) My main complaint about boxing is that it's not responsive enough. I think this is due to poor programming, not the Wii remote itself. I believe that because his hands usually follow mine perfectly - if I scratch my nose, he puts his hand in front of his face - but there are times when I throw a punch and it doesn't register, or I throw a hook or an undercut and it registers as a jab. The Wii remote presents some interesting challenges to programmers, because they have to take the data the wii remote sends them and interpret it into motions - if thresholds are set too low or too high, it will not feel natural. Zelda and the other Wii sports games are examples of good Wii programming.

Don't swing back, just push it forward.

You do control the ball, actually speed is varied with the speed you move the remote. It took me awhiel to figure that out while i was throwing 65mph fastballs.....

for a tips and tricks thread I don't really see much in the way of tips and tricks. It's more like user experience. Lets see some more helpful bits of advice!
That being said, I don't have much in the way of tips and tricks but I've been looking and not finding anything either which sucks because I know that there is more to it than I have figured out so far.

in tennis, it is obviously possible to put spin on the ball, but I really can't seem to figure out what works to actually spin it. I've tried a few different things like holding down a and/or b while hitting the ball, or holding the controller at different angles but I seem to have mixed results.

Bowling I think I've got as figured out as possible. If you rotate the controller at the end of your swing the ball will spin in that direction. (rotate as in the way you rotate your bike when you are about to make a turn a high speed) If you have ever watched a bowler run a perfect strike on tv then you know where to hit the head pin. If you are spinning it to the left, it should hit squarely on the right hand side of the pin. That's what seems to work for me anyways.

golf is a lot of fun. Putting can be frustrating though. If you use a shorter stroke and sort of flick your wrist you may have a bit more luck. I did. It's tricky to flick your wrist slowly, but it does work not too badly after a bit of mussing about getting the hang of it.

baseball; when you are pitching simply hold down a and/or b to put different types of curves and spins on the ball.. If you just sit there for a bit doing nothing, then you will get a little onscreen help that explains it. When you are batting, I find that it is good to take a practice swing or 2 if you have time. Same thing they do in real life and it works for them. The timing is tricky but keep practicing and trying different things untill something works for you then try to refine it.

I am not going to touch boxing because I'm not much good at it. I find that it is the most finicky to get the control movements into the right type of character movement.

Oh one more thing, I hear that in 'power throws' in bowling practice, if you drive it right down the right rail on the last shot that it will cause some kind of domino effect and knock all of the pins down, helping your score out a lot!

To anyone else posting in this thread, I beg you, give us some help based on your experiences in the game, but just things like:
"Line up with the second dot on the right and throw straight, Fairly easy to get a trike or at elast 8 pins down." -- that may work for you, but different people throw differently and are going to have different results. Think about it.

"I heard that everybody really HATES boxing for some reason...

But hey, its a free game!" -- this a is great tip... wait a minute, that's not a tip or a trick at all!

"I love the golf..." -- nevermind.

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, I was just frustrated because I've been looking for some kind of tips and tricks thread and I thought I had found one untill I read all the posts. TIPS AND TRICKS PEOPLE not your favorite/least favorite thing.

I do pretty well in golf, putting can get screwed up sometimes though. One of the latter holes gives you a chance at eagle if you try to cut the whole thing by aiming far right between the trees, but the damn trees get in the way too often. It seems to simple, but golf definitely takes some luck and skill.

In baseball, always throw inside fastballs or breaking pitches that start down the middle of the plate and go in toward or away from the batter. Change your speeds often as well.

Golf, hole 9: On the first shot aim for the island to your left and then onto the island with the flag on your second shot, its a relatively easy eagle.

My biggest golf advice is to NOT use your wrist when you putt. Move your entire arm back, then forward in a smooth motion without any wrist flicking whatsoever.

To curve the ball in tennis, you need to give your wiimote a little flicky-twisty sort of thing *right* when you hit it (it almost feels like you're doing it *after* you make contact). It's kind of useless, though, and the added lift often makes it go out at the back of the court.

In boxing, don't actually try to "punch" with the wiimote and nunchuck. Basically, start by holding them both in the "guard" position. Then tilt them forward (like hitting a small drum), backward, to the side, etc.

20 posts and 1200+ views, that must be some sort of record for least posts/views.

Anyhoo, in bowling, the later you let go, the less spin the ball will have. I.e., if you lob the ball onto the lane, it will go fairly straight, if you roll it the entire way, it will have more curve.

Ripped from Gamefaqs :

Change bowling ball color

As The screen is fading to black for bowling, hold down the control pad until it fades to bowling for these colors:
Code Effect
Control Pad Up Blue Ball
Control Pad Right Gold Ball
Control Pad Down Green Ball
Control Pad Left Red Ball

Change the tennis court
To change the tennis court to the blue practice court, press and hold (2) at the warning screen that shows after selecting characters.

Play Golf without maps or meters
To disable the power meter, map, and the wind speed indicator, press and hold (2), then make a selection at the "Select a Course" screen.

Silver Boxing Gloves
After you've beaten the Grand Champion, Matt, in a boxing match you'll be able to wear silver boxing gloves. To do so, hold (1) when the screen becomes black before a boxing match.

Special Bowling Ball
Get to pro level to unlock a bowling ball with diamond designs on it.

Amuse Crowd in Bowling

To make the crowd laugh in bowling, move to either of the gutters in your lane, turn into opposite lane, and bowl so the ball goes over the barier between the lanes. The ball will go into the gutter in the opposite lane and the crowd will laugh.

Scare Crowd in Bowling
To scare the crowd while bowling, start the regular motion for bowling and let go on the backswing. The ball will fly backwards and the crowd will scream and jump.

91 Pin Strike in Power Bowling Training
To get an automatic 91 pin strike in the last round of Power Bowling, Throw the ball on the right or left rail (depending on if you are right or left handed) so that it stays on it the whole time. If it reaches the end without falling off, you will hear a "click" and an explosion. Then all the pins will fall down from the shockwave. NOTE: This only works on the last round.

Some golf tips from my uncle and parent's(they love golf): Do everything from your shoulders. Also read the green(the slopes, dips, wind) and make sure to adjust acordingly.
