What if your hunger literally drives you mad? Nags at you constantly like an addiction that can and will never be broken? What if your body's needs and desires are stronger than any will power imaginable?

What if this compulsion to eat were genetic? What if this genetic compulsion becomes hazardous in today's society?

It is not, nor will it ever be as simple as just "don't eat as much." If it were, 90+% of dieters would not be failing long term as they do.

Man...I don't know if I agree or disagree with you. :D

and the types of food. I was watching something about how there's a shift in obesity in a socio-economic sense . You used to be obese if you were rich, typically. Now it seems the people that are obese are the people that are near or below the poverty line.

Also look at what's in food. The more processed a food is, the harder it is to digest.

I think that a diet like that would eventually kill anyone over 5 and half feet tall from malnutrition. The recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 a day.

Haha...that "recommended" intake is a joke, pure and simple. Someone who is 6'8" and 200 lbs needs to eat a lot more than someone who is 5'4" 200lbs to stay healthy. And by a lot more I mean > 2000 kcals per day. Lifestyle and body type play huge factors in a person's "recommended" daily intake. The FDA (or whoever came up with the 2k figure) is made up of a bunch of morons.

C'mon now...

The cause of the increased rates of obesity in recent years is actually quite simple. Medical science fscked up. They got people believing that fatty (or otherwise improper) foods were responsible for obesity when the actual cause is excessive caloric intake versus inadequate metabolic rate. Soon, everything was "lite," "diet", "fat free," etc. Fats may have been cut but carbs were increased. The FDA published its food pyramid encouraging everyone to eat lots of grains and cereals without telling the public that refined flours convert to sugars in the body more readily than table sugar itself, causing the body to release a massive dose of insulin to lower the blood sugar, making people hungry more rapidly. Even Atkins stuck to the same basic message, he just flipped it around from carbs to proteins, and people lost weight because they ate a few less calories as proteins take longer to metabolize than refined carbs.
In the meantime, fad diets remain the rage, but people always gain the weight back because they refuse to make permanent changes to their lifestyles.

Someone should write a book on this. How doctors and the FDA thought they knew everything and encouraged America to get fat and diabetic.

Solution: exercise regularly (at least 30 mins a day 3 days a week), always eat breakfast, eat smaller meals more often throughout the day, avoid big/heavy meals, cut overall caloric intake, eat less refined flours and sugars, stop drinking sodas (even diet), eat more fruits and vegetables, nuts and unrefined grains.

Nice post, but what's wrong with diet sodas? I could do without them, but I need the caffeine and pills cost too dmned much - suggestions?

I completely agree, and it's what I posted probably several pages back. There's a NYT article about it, but I do think it's a bit biased. The main message is true however.

Drink coffee or tea then if you need the caffeine. Sodas (even "diet") are chemical monstronsities without nutrional value.

I've read a bit about sucralose. It's actually not bad if consumed in small quantities. But tea and coffee is cheaper and better for you.

I seriously believe that food portions have gotten bigger, kids are playing outside less too. OP, your theory is completly reasonable too, but I think that there's more to it than that.
edit: Soda is a huge concern in this day and age. I was at Wendy's yesterday and I noticed that the smallest sized drink is 20oz, that's pretty large when you think about it, but we're so used to it that we can probobly finish something like that pretty quickly.

OP is right, we are built to store energy. We take in energy and do not use most of it.

I work outside so I am not very out of shape, but put me in a desk job and I get a belly....

Obviously...you're most likely intaking just as much kcals (if not more) while at the same time not burning as many calories per day because you're behind a desk......

Yes, my parents try to buy crap instead of good stuff all the time. I'm a student and I don't work so I have to pretty much put up with it by slapping them around every now and tehn and telling them that they're poor.
