Canucks shut down Coyotes

Associated Press
10/5/2003

PHOENIX (AP) - Markus Naslund scored his first goal of the pre-season to lead the Vancouver Canucks past the Phoenix Coyotes 2-0 Saturday night.

Brendan Morrison also scored for the Canucks, who finished the pre-season 5-5. Phoenix, which opens the season at home Friday against St. Louis, finished 2-4-0-1.

The Coyotes were winless in three exhibition games at home, during which they were outscored 11-2.

Naslund scored just 1:48 into the game, swiping a loose rebound at the top of the crease past Phoenix goalie Sean Burke. Morrison made it 2-0 at 14:36 of the second, taking an outlet pass from Todd Bertuzzi just inside the blue line and scoring on the breakaway.

Vancouver goalie Dan Cloutier stopped all eight shots he faced in his lone period of work. Johan Hedberg played the final two periods, stopping 10 shots.

Burke made 25 saves for the Coyotes.

Phoenix left wing Brian Savage dressed but did not play due to a slight groin pull.

Canucks sign veteran Mike Keane

Canadian Press
10/8/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks signed 36-year-old forward Mike Keane to a one-year, $500,000 US contract Wednesday.

Keane, who was an unrestricted free agent, attended training camp on a tryout basis after the Colorado Avalanche bought out the final year of his contract this summer.

The 15-year NHL veteran has played more than 1,300 regular season and playoff games. Keane, a three-time Stanley Cup winner, brings leadership and experience to a young Vancouver team that has improved steadily in the regular season, but struggled in the playoffs.

``One of the things we like about Mike is this is the first time we've given our group someone who has won and someone who really does have a vast, vast knowledge of what it takes,'' said Canucks coach Marc Crawford, who coached Keane in 1996 when the Avalanche won the Cup.

After recording just five goals and five assists in 65 games with the Avalanche last season, Keane realizes his role with the Canucks might be part time.

``To play 20 games or 10 games and be a rah-rah guy is not going to make me happy,'' Keane said. ``But obviously you have to give up some things once you get older and to me to play 82 games on this team is going to be very difficult with the depth we have.''

Keane did score two goals and add an assist in five pre-season games, but he was most valuable killing penalties and in key defensive zone situations - particularly late in games.

Keane, who wasn't drafted, signed in Montreal as a free agent in 1985 and won a Stanley Cup there in 1993. He also won a title with Dallas in 1999, and spent part of a season with both the New York Rangers and St. Louis Blues.

Flames, Canucks open season in Vancouver

Sports Ticker
10/9/2003

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- After receiving the honor as the first black captain in NHL history, Jarome Iginla and the Calgary Flames face the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place in the season opener for both teams.

Iginla was chosen as the Flames' captain by the team on Wednesday, replacing Craig Conroy, who served in that role the last two seasons. Conroy and and defenseman Robyn Regehr will be alternate captains.

The 26-year-old left wing is entering his eighth season in the NHL. He won the league scoring title in the 2001-02 season and led the Flames with 67 points last season.

Iginla is a rare bright spot for Calgary, which finished last in the Northwest Division with just 75 points last season.

Iginla, Conroy and left wing Martin Gelinas are the only returning players to score more than 10 goals last season as the Flames lost left wing Chris Drury, who recorded the third-best point total on the team in 2002-03. Drury was traded with center Steve Begin to Buffalo for center Steve Reinprecht and defenseman Rhett Warrener

Calgary improved last season after Darryl Sutter took over as coach, going 12-7-6-0 down the stretch.

Vancouver finished in second place in the Northwest Division with 106 points last season and lost to the Minnesota Wild in a dramatic seven-game series in the Western Conference semifinals last season.

Canucks goaltender Dan Cloutier's job may be in jeopardy after the team acquired Johan Hedberg from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Cloutier is Vancouver's starting goalie as the season begins, but may not be given a lot of room for mistakes.

The Canucks lost a pair of two-way forwards in the offseason as center Trevor Letowski and right wing Trent Klatt went elsewhere via free agency.

But Vancouver still has the high-scoring duo of left wing Todd Bertuzzi and right wing Markus Naslund, who were two of the top five scorers in the NHL last season.

Despite the Cancuks stellar 2002-03 season, they defeated the Flames just once, going 1-2-2-0.

im at work, anyway to listen to the game online?

NHL.com usually has all the games available streaming. They're the streamed versions of the actual radio game, slight delay though. So if you hear someone in the next office cheering because they have a radio, you'll know they scored 2 minutes later 😀
