Sedins accept Canucks' qualifying offers

VANCOUVER - Restricted free agents Henrik and Daniel Sedin have accepted their qualifying offers from the Vancouver Canucks, according to the Team 1040.

Henrik led the Swedish twins in scoring last season, recording eight goals and 31 assists in 78 games.

Daniel had 14 goals and 17 assists in 79 games.

More to follow.

Cheers,
Aquaman

I hope those 2 go nuts this year. I get this feeling that they will continue to be mediocre, then the Canucks will trade them, then they turn into awesome players to just piss me off! 😉

That seems to be the case for most players we trade 😉

Red Wings sign Ray Whitney

TSN.ca Staff
7/29/2003

The Detroit Red Wings have made a move to help offset the loss of Sergei Fedorov, signing unrestricted free agent forward Ray Whitney to a four-year, $12.5-million contract.

Whitney scored 24 goals and 52 assists for a total of 76 points last season with the Columbus Blue Jackets. In 633 career NHL games, Whitney has scored 191 goals and 301 assists for 492 points.

His two full seasons in Columbus have been productive, with 45 goals and 137 points in 148 games to Whitney?s credit. The Blue Jackets, however, opted not to bring him back, signing unrestricted free agent Todd Marchant instead. Marchant signed for five years at $2.9 million per season.

Contract discussions between Whitney?s camp and the Blue Jackets were strained in the off-season. When Marchant?s signing was announced, Columbus general manager Doug MacLean made it clear that the money the team had budgeted for Whitney had been given to Marchant instead.

After a stellar junior career in Spokane that included a Memorial Cup title, Whitney was drafted by San Jose in the second round of the 1991 NHL entry draft. Whitney signed with Edmonton in October of 1997, but was waived a month later. He was claimed by the Panthers and blossomed in Florida, scoring 97 goals and 227 points in 273 games over three-and-a-half seasons.

The Panthers traded Whitney to Columbus as the March, 2001 trade deadline approached.

Canadian Press
8/25/2003

PITTSBURGH - The Penguins have acquired a second round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft from Vancouver in exchange for goaltender Johan Hedberg, it was announced today by Penguins General Manager Craig Patrick.

Report: Canucks sign Slegr

TSN.ca Staff
9/3/2003

The Vancouver Canucks are looking to former player Jiri Slegr as a replacement for unsigned defenceman Murray Baron.

According to the Vancouver Province, Slegr has agreed to a one year deal worth $800,000 but with bonuses, he could earn slightly less than $1-million.

Canucks assistant general manager Dave Nonis refused to comment on the report except to say that the team is considering all options in replacing Baron.

"We'll look at signing another NHL defenceman," Nonis tells the Vancouver Sun. "I think we'll find someone who fits into our group of veterans."

Baron rejected a one year, $1-million offer from Vancouver before becoming an unrestricted free agent in July. Since then, he has been unable to find another team willing to give him a multi-year offer.

Baron's agent Steve Mountain says his first choice is to return to Vancouver. Nonis admits that signing another player would not close the door on a return for Baron but would make it more difficult.

The 32-year-old Slegr turned down a $2.5-million offer from the Atlanta Thrashers last season before splitting his playing time between teams in his native Czech Republic and Russia. He last played for the Canucks in 1995.

Slegr may be 32, but he plays like he's 42. 😛

I hope we sign Barron 🙁 He has less skill then Slegr but more grit & he is well liked in the dressing room.
